There is a local heron rookery in town that has been used for several years. Several eucalyptus, willow and fir trees provide nesting canopies for Great egrets, Black Crowned Night herons, Cattle egrets, Snowy egrets, Bullocks Oriole and sparrows, and these trees are located on a rather busy residential street. City authorities cordoned off the central median strip to protect chicks should they fall from the nest, and they do fall. If they land on the hard asphalt, they likely die, but if they fall on the cushioned ( with straw bales) median strip they stand a chance to survive their fall. The Bird Rescue Center has volunteers who drive by on a daily basis, and on some days as many as 9 chicks fall from their nest. Mostly it is fewer than that.
Added to this precarious situation are the presence of crows, sometimes harassing the nestlings and worse, causing them to fall off their perches. Here are some photos of such a situation.
