p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f:1.4

I recently acquired an Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f:1.4 lens (1971 vintage) to use in combination with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III. This is a totally manual lens and requires an adapter to "screw" onto my 5D3. As luck would have it, I found a decent copy in the "used" cabinet of my local camera shop. I picked-up this little beauty for $60.00. The lens is built like a tank and has wonderful glass that renders images differently from modern lenses; at least to my eye. This little bugger has a radioactive thorium glass element near the rear of the lens that gives it a "cool" factor I like

Here are a few simple images taken in my living room using the north facing window for my light source. Based on this initial trial, the darn lens worked like a champ on my 5D3. I'm a seriously happy camper and look forward to more experimentation. In total, I've got $70 USD tied up in this lens and adapter.

Of the screwmount Tak's it's one of my favourites(the 85 being the other), sharp and good flare resistance, though I think I prefer my SMC K 50/1.4 more due to the bayonet mount and possibly even sharper.
Enjoy it, it should provide you with many years of faithful service.

I really should use my S-M-C 50/1.4 more often, it's one of the best performing 50's I've used (I've owned and used 10+ different 50 mm lenses from various manufacturers).
Here's a shot from my old X-E1, at f/2:

Wonderful images sir. I love the rendering this lens produces. What is the Ar7 Mod? Sounds very interesting.

Thank you. I intend to use this lens for quite some time to come.

What a terrific image. The bokeh this lens produces is wonderful. I'll bet the super tak road your X-E1 very nicely.

I am sorry. I had a typo above. The camera is the Sony A7r and the mod is a reference to the sensor stack modification done by a company called Kolari http://www.kolarivision.com/thinfilterconversion.html

The Kolari conversion effectively enhances the ability of a digital sensor to accurately read images from severely angled light hitting the far corners of the image. This was not a problem in the days of film but digital sensors don't do as well in the corners. In short, the conversion makes a lot of old lenses designed before the days of digital work better. Images look more like they did on film.

yup, one of my favorite 50s. should use it more, but i don't like the direction the focus ring turns and have been distracted by more exotic 50s.

here's a little more about the lens and it's history: https://luminous-landscape.com/my-favorite-lens/

Thanks much for the clarification. Interestingly, I've been contemplating moving from my Canon equipment to the A7 series. The new mirrorless cameras and their ability to generally accommodate "other"/"vintage" lenses is very appealing.

Many thanks for the LuLa article. The information was very interesting. I also am currently on a quest for several other exotic 50's myself. The Canon "Dream Lens" is at the top of my list but not currently within my budget

I agree with sebboh that the focus ring direction makes using the lens somewhat awkward but it gives great results. The Sony A7 series really does make it attractive and easy to play with old glass. Here is another shot taken to show off its 3D pop. In this case, so much pop that parts of the plant (Euphorbia) appear to be floating in space.

What a terrific image. This kind of stuff really has me getting serious about a Sony A7 series body. Question; how does performing this "mod" affect the cameras performance with modern Sony/Zeiss glass?

It doesn't seem to effect native lenses much if at all, other than a WB correction.
I'm planning on getting my A7r modded too.

Enjoy your lens, I used to love shooting with one of these on Micro Four Thirds - beautiful rendering and great manual-focus feel.

Here are a couple of shots with the Asahi Super Takumar 50mm F/1.4 on a Sony A7r Mod. What is different about these shots is the camera adapter. I am using a focusing M42 adapter which allows very close macro focus. This lens really works well as a macro because it already has such good 3D pop.
