Ok I posted in the Canon forum also but I am finally ready to buy a big white lol

My max at the moment is 4500 so I will prob need to go with used.
Its between the 300 2.8 IS, 400 2.8 IS, or 500 F4 IS
I think I'm leaning towards the 400 2.8 IS as I can use for wildlife and sports of my kids better than the 500 but the 500 is still tempting. lol

Current equipment is
5D3, 6D, 70-200 MK II, and various L primes.

I mostly shoot weddings and portraits but I want to get to shooting stuff for myself

You better be in great shape if you plan to tote the 400 around. I have friends that have been injured carrying the 400 f2.8 around. It may be a bit long for sports depending on what sport. The 500 would be my pick for wildlife and the 300 for sports.

I agree 110% with Morris. The 400 f2.8 is a load and may be too long for most youth sports. The 500 would be best for birding and wildlife, but still a handful. IMO, the 300 f2.8 is the most versatile (and easiest to tote) of the 3. In that, just add a 1.4x TC to get a bit extra length at the cost of a stop. For birding and wildlife shots. And, again just my opinion, 300mms FF is a more usable focal length, for any other type shooting you do. You can even use it for headshots. Not so sure about weddings, however, unless you shoot from the balcony ;-)

Good luck and what great choices you have here. Hard to see how you can go wrong, no matter which one you buy.

That's a given. The lenses you have are seldom long enough when shooting wildlife. But not too many of us can afford a 1200mm lens If wildlife is the main task for this lens. By all means, go as long as your pocketbook will allow.

If you can only get one get the 300 f2.8. You can use it with the 1.4 extender or the 2x extender. You'll get more flexibility and it is lighter and easy to hand hold.

Get the 500, I handhold it 99% of the time. NO REGRETS.

Compromise. Get a used 300 2.8 IS and a Sigma 150-600.
