I have never posted to the Cityscape forum before but I though you might enjoy seeing this pan shot I took of Los Angeles. Every day I go for a walk from our house up into Griffith Park to what is called the Helipad and back - about 3 miles round trip - all in just under an hour. There is a great view of Los Angeles from up there. On Thursday, when I arrived up there I realized that the rare rainstorm we were having in Los Angeles provided an opportunity for a fantastic pan shot. So, I walked home as fast as I could and immediately turned around and made the trek back up - this time with my camera and heavy tripod. I got back up there somewhat after 7:00 PM so this was shot a little later. I was amazed by how much detail I managed to capture. It's too bad that it automatically gets shrunk down when I post it since you can't really appreciate all the tiny details. Lights are just starting to come on in houses and car headlights are clearly visible way in the distance. On the extreme right, you can see the famous Griffith Park Observatory and nestled just beneath it is the Greek Theater. Then you can see out to Century City and the Pacific Ocean lit by rays of sunlight. In the middle is the Palos Verdes Peninsula and you can also actually see all the way out to Long Beach on the far horizon - something that the usual layer of smog makes impossible. I can tell, because I recognize the Vincent Thomas Bridge but one would have to zoom in to about 150% to see it. There are several airplanes visible - the most prominent being about 1/3 of the way over from the left side. On the left are the tall buildings of Downtown LA. When I was a kid, I remember going up to a similar vantage point and being amazed by the single tall building that was City Hall. Now, that tall building is barely visible as a short pointy building on the extreme left of Downtown. I shot several different exposures of each segment and first combined them as HDR's before putting the resulting six pieces together into a pan. Anyway, it turns out that it was a worthwhile endeavor to have slogged up there a second time and I hope you enjoy seeing this, even if most of the detail is lost.
UPDATE: Yay! I figured out how to post the photo a little larger, at least. Maybe you'll be able so see it a bit better now. And, I've taken off the mat to give it even more visibility.
