p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Liberating from Samsara

This is my first post Patagonia Photo Adventure 2015 with Artur Stanisz (an instructional photo tour I organized this year) photo I am sharing here on Fred Miranda Forum. The description regarding circumstances related to this photo follows, below.

Photography is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
This is its greatness and pitfall because it challenges ones ability to react to rapidly changing and usually hard to forecast light conditions. The photographer might be ready to shoot certain landscape, have great, carefully chosen and distinguished composition capturing amazing natural wonder, the best equipment to use, but light or weather conditions can easily prohibit perfect photo execution.
In situations like this some photographers might see a loss, I see an opportunity.
If light doesn’t happen in the chosen direction I don’t pack my gear and go, but I look around trying to find the composition that could complement the light happening in the opposite direction. This is exactly what happened with this photo.
Everybody who has ever visited Patagonia can vouch that Patagonian forest with its bonsai –like trees is one of the most fascinating jewels of Patagonia. Since I saw Patagonia’s trees for the first time their shapes, strength and raw beauty mesmerized me. I took many photos of them, but only just a few have been able to show the essence of Patagonia’s landscape.
For this particular evening when I took this photo I planned totally different composition, the one that was suppose to showcase big mountains in the background. Unfortunately, the light above the mountains was not happening. So I quickly looked around and decided to take the opportunity of this phenomenal light that was happening in exactly opposite direction. Shortly afterwards I noticed this dead tree. It looked as if it was reaching for the sky begging for liberation. It looked old and tired as if it experienced many fights with Patagonian wind.

Comments as usually are appreciated.

Hey Artur,

Very nice work here, that is amazing light. And your words are a great reminder that while pre-visualization can be one of our strengths as photographers, being aware of our surroundings and responding to changing conditions is equally as important.

I had read that very same advice from a photog a few years ago. He said to always make sure to look the other direction before packing up and going home.

You executed this perfectly and I would say that it paid off big time for you!
Fantastic image and your composition is spot on. Nice job!

Well you had a very good scene and you lined it u very well.

Thanks for the words of confirmation. We may all know them but being able to access them very quickly is the true gift.

great, first I thought it was Eastern Sierra. This is different than all the grand mountains we normally see from Patagonia.

Artur,

What a wonderful image! The composition is exemplary. I can only dream of making an image like this. The diagonals are excellent, starting with the roots guiding the eye to the trunk leaning in the sky. The only improvement I could suggest and it is just an opinion is to crop a bit off the top, down to the top of the primary cloud formation. It might make the composition even stronger.

Thanks everybody for kind works. Every time I go to Patagonia I try to bring back new compositions/photos of new places. I didn't want to repeat the same compositions that I already have in my Patagonia portfolio. Of course when you lead a tour, you need to go to standard places since photographers that go there for the first time usually wish to have their own shot of most popular places (this is understandable). Nevertheless, I try to encourage exploration whenever possible because this what we see on majority of photos from Patagonia, on different photo portals, this is just a drop in the sea of possibilities that Patagonia has to offer. The possibilities for photography are immense, but usually that requires a bit of hiking and many do not fancy that as much as I do

Lovely capture! Having just returned from Patagonia I know what you mean by the Patagonia's trees - both living or dead - they are mesmerizing. And it seemed like most of our colored skies was pointed away from the mountains. But the raw beauty everywhere could not be denied!

This is an amazing shot. Almost like doing a portrait session for the tree and with a pose. The light is awesome.

Thanks, Jason.....the pose wasn't that easy to keep. The wind was biblical over there....about 80 km/h that night....huge wind gusts near Fitz Roy where I took this photo)
