I spent some time today trying to make my stunt Woodies fly, but to no avail.....the little buggers were apparently in no mood to do anything that strenuous.
So I gave that one some rest and went to take a few long range shots of a cormorant, six shots to be exact. One of them turned out a duck in flight totally unexpectedly, and that is the closest I've come to a flying duck shot today.
There is always tomorrow.

Nice......the sense of motion you've created by employing the blurring effect makes it really feel like I was there watching the duck fly by.

So how do you feel about the ISO of the camera? How about the focusing system?

The duck totally bombed my shot.

Peter, other than the flying pijun-picture-hog, that looks to be a fairly noise free and quite sharp image, I'm looking forward to what you pull out of that tiny Rebel

The camera meets my expectations on resolving detail, and it seems to exhibit more-or-less expected high ISO noise performance, although I am still experimenting a bit with the best approach to NR on its files.

Peter,

Did you have the T6s set to Case 3: "Instantly focus on subjects suddenly entering AF points"?
If so it failed miserably.

It seems that there are still patches of ice on your pond. Brrrrrrr!!!

Db, I couldn't find the "tracking cases" feature in the menu. I need to start reading the manual. There is also a "face detect" feature in the camera, not sure yet what that does....can it track a duck face ?

How in the heck did you get a T6s so early? I am still waiting for my pre-order copy?

Come on, the guy who owns every current supertelephoto lens and probably has owned every previous one (sans 1200 f/5.6) is surely able to acquire the very first Canadian T6s

Don't look too hard. Also don't look to hard for any other AF modes like expand, spot etc....

I have read through the manual I will never use 90% of the features of this camera, but I am excited for the upgrade. I want it for 1. articulating screen 2. enhanced abilities for high ISO use so I need not bring my 5DII for event shooting in a local arena 3. increased resolution ( my old XSI was 12 megapixels) 4. niceties like the touch screen and being able to touch focus when using the articulating screen. I have a spare LP-E17 battery, a new 128 gig SDXC card already purchased and waiting for the camera to arrive. Having an updated Lightroom CC that can process the camera's raw files installed today is a nice bonus

The frontal BIF is my test objective for tomorrow. If I can do it with my 10 year old 1DsMkII, do you think today's T6s could bag a shot of this type ? Frankly, I have my doubts, but we shall see soon enough. We'll start with a very fast lens (probably 300 f/2.8) to make it easier on the camera AF system, and if that works, we'll press 100-400 II into service.

Peter, if the FPS doesn't prohibit and you could grab such a shot with your previous 7D, my thinking is your 'skills' will be up to the task you've chosen. Much depends on how well Canon has actually implemented that 19pt all cross type AF in AiS.

I'm eager to see your results with the T6s, push it, push it real good

Jerry, I never got a shot of that type with my old 7D, and I probably didn't even try hard.....that camera just didn't sit well with me from day one.
Actually, one doesn't need a very fast FPS for that......even 3FPS is enough. But one needs to fire in the right moment 1-3 shot bursts.
BTW, this kind of shots is not an easy fare for 1DX either.

Long ago we had something called 'anticipation'; no motor drives, and one shot to get it right, and those days were a very good teacher. Buying wise; for obvious reasons, has always been about feel and my aversion to certain designs, push-pull but one of a few.

So far I'm liking the 7D's heft and it's bells-n-whistles, but it's AF; those black rectangles, and sad to say it's 18MP sensor really aren't floating my boat. There is more to discover, experiment with, but I find it's IQ very close, just ever so slightly above the 50D; both requiring a bit more PP than my 40D, the 1DMk2N require. It's saving grace are the images Tony has pull-off with it in-hand and use of the NR software he recommended which is fantastic for my purposes.

I'm really torn between the heft; which I love, and awkwardness of my physicality, and the lightness yet bulk of the 40D. The 6D felt fantastic in-hand, much like my A-1 did so long ago; said 40D does today. I suppose my interest in the T6s is simply pointed at how good it's sensor performs and where Canon might be headed. I can see myself quite happy with the 40D and 6D for quite some time unless the wear on the 40D ends it's life, that's when/where a T6s like body might play a role.

As for the pijuns and their flying about, that level of imaging is beyond my skill set let alone my physical. Surfers, motocross and racing imaging seem much easier, as you can often position self, anticipate, for similar recurring events and their locations/lighting. I'm afraid I don't swing, move around much, enough to capture said pijun action; perched pijuns are probably more my speed.

Once out and about this will sort itself and it will be in the doing/effort that success will be found, not necessarily in the image capturing. A good flying pijun is my goal, hand-held or via Gimbal if possible

If you would humor me, when pijun testing is completed, might you point those steely quick eyes on a non action subject so as to demonstrate the T6s's resolving powers on say garden/flower fare, etc. for that is where my major interest is with this new sensor.

Can't wait to see more BIF, how about one with the T6s and your fishy fifteen

Cheers,
Jerry

Jerry, I'll put something together for you, which would hopefully give you a bit of a feel for 60MP FF equivalent pixel density.
BTW, I will not be spending too much time asking of this camera something it was really not designed for, nor have I bought it for, such as frontal BIF.

As far as dealing with the question of how good the T6 sensor is, I can only ascertain its performance in my photography type, which is very practical and narrow. Therefore, if people want expertly reviews, they'd just have to go to professional websites such as DxO, The Digital Picture.com, Lensrentals, Ken Rockwell, DPR etc. There is certainly no shortage of camera/lens review resources out there.
