p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Any EOS M3 owners have the Tamron 18-200 ef-m?

Hi guys,

I just got my EOS m3 in from Japan along with the Tamron 18-200. I already have the Canon 18-55, 22, 11-22 and the 55-200 but figured I would order the 18-200 for when I really need to keep the weight off. It seems to work perfectly fine with my original EOS M but goes beep boop electronic bonkers if you try to use it mounted on the M3. I'll put up a video tomorrow but figured I would throw up this topic before I forgot.

BTW: The oem / Canon EOS M EF-M lenses all work fine on the M3 as well. Just wanted to make that clear. It's only the Tamron that works on the M1 but not the M3.

The lens probably needs a firmware update, whether Tamron will release one is another matter

Just a headsup for my fellow M3 owners / prospective buyers (short YouTube clips).

EOS M3 w/ 18-55 works perfectly.

BTW: These videos were done in A+ - with continuous autofocus OFF. Also tested the M3 with my other EF-M lenses and they all work fine.

It is also my understanding that the Tamron needs a firmware update and is not working with the M3 (at least a week or so ago). You should contact Tamron and see what they say. I don't have any ... but, it seems to be having problems with Yonguno flash units also.

My M3 (from Japan) won't even power on if my Tamron 18-200 is attached. I can power on without the lens attached, then attach the lens, but I get no AF or aperture control. Very annoying...

I also tried a variety of Canon EF and Sigma EF-S lenses via the EF-M to EF adapter, and they all work fine, although the Sigmas are painfully slow to focus. In some cases it's faster to use MF, now that the M3 has peaking.

It looks like Tamron is aware of the issue. Here is a press release from their website:

Dear users and potential purchasers of the 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (Model B011) for Canon (EOS M)

Thank you for your interest in Tamron’s lenses.

We have learned that the Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (Model B011) for Canon (EOS M) does not function properly when used with the Canon EOS M3, which went on sale in Japan on March 26.

We sincerely apologize to all users and potential purchasers for any inconvenience the issue may cause.

An investigation is currently underway, and as soon as we know more we will post a notice on the Tamron website.

Tamron has a fix!

But you'll have to bring/send your lens to an authorized Tamron service center...

This is an update regarding our announcement in March of compatibility issues between the 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DiⅢ VC (Model B011) for Canon (EOS M) and the Canon EOS M3 body, which went on sale recently.

We are pleased to advise you that we will start a firmware update service for B011 for Canon (EOS M).

With this update the lens functions properly when used with the Canon EOS M3.

The update can be carried out at Tamron authorized service centers. For more information and handling procedures please see the Tamron website or contact your local Tamron distributor.

I just spoke to the guy at Tamron Canada (Amplis Photo), and it doesn't look good...

He said that even though there is a firmware update, because Canon Canada (and Canon USA) doesn't actually support the Eos M3, should anything go wrong in the firmware update, the Tamron guys won't be able to consult Canon for a fix, and it won't be covered by warranty.

This will likely be the same for the US. Perhaps if you live in Europe, you'd have better luck. There shouldn't be any issues if you are in Japan.

So, either sell the lens to an Eos M/M2 owner, or keep it for your own M/M2, but getting it to work on the M3 (in North America) will likely never happen...

Hey guys,

i've been meaning to update this thread since I had this fix done a few months ago but totally slipped my mind. Anyway, I Twitter DM'ed someone at Tamron customer service and they ended up doing the firmware update for me as a courtesy. Shipped it off and a few days later got it back. It works fine now. If you are in the same boat I was, give it a shot.

note - the Tamron 16-300mm VC PZD also does NOT work on the Canon M3.

the whole camera shuts down - all is black.

a great reason NOT to buy non-Canon glass. seriously - I have 3 Tamron lenses that I really like (60mm macro, 70-300mm VC, and 150-600mm VC). then there's the crappy 16-300mm VC PZD that Tamron decided to manufacture in China. simply holding this 16-300 tells the story. imho, there's damn little about it to recommend. don't ask me about the phony rebate that never arrived, or the unacceptably soft images that sporadically appear.

to me, this lens is simply annoying.
