p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 11mm Sunrise

Here is my first real landscape shot with my Canon 11-24. I've had the lens for about a week but haven't had time to take it out on a real shoot yet. (note- I've re-edited this shot to address the white areas in the tree branches, caused by some over-sharpening plus the fact that there actually are white areas of sky in these places) This was taken on a quick roadside stop on my way to an appointment in Melbourne yesterday morning, I had thrown my camera bag in the car just in case of any opportunities on the way. It was taken in a bit of a rush as I was running around in the field trying to find a half decent composition before the colour faded. It was accidently shot at f4 and ISO400 despite the camera being on a tripod, so image quality is not quite what it could have been.
I'll also add another shot, also taken at 11mm, taken at sunset on my way home.

I like the second one quite well.

The first one has an effect in the tree branches that looks like it used to look in older versions of Lightroom where the 'fill light' slider was just a bit too much to the right side. Still, it could just be the effect of the background sky, as well.

Still, nicely done, and I don't think I've ever seen a rectilinear shot taken at wider than 14mm. That's WIDE.

Nice. These are exactly why I want to get a wider angle lens, I really want to play around with extreme depth of field and foreground/background components.

I imagine 11mm would be challenging to find a good composition. I like both these. Nice shots.

Hey Wayne,

That looks like it will be a good lens for Canon shooters. #1 looks great except for the blending around the silhouetted trees, the sky is lighter in between the leaves and branches. But overall it looks great. Maybe I am just too used to shooting at 14mm myself I don't notice this "splaying" of clouds that Ben is pointing out, the clouds look great to me.

The 2nd image looks good. That's the sunset image? I don't notice any WA distortion or splaying in it.

Ahhh thanks for posting shots from the new 11mm!!! how is it? Is it a keeper? I've been hearing really good things about it. Good flare control? The first one is a keeper for me. Love how the sky just keeps wrapping up. I can only imaging using 11 mm along the coasts close to rocks to really accentuate the tunnel vision! :P

Nice shots at a very challenging focal length. The second is very nice.

Gorgeous images! I've got a 11-24 arriving tomorrow (I hope!) A truly groundbreaking lens and I'm eager to explore new visual possibilities.

Both a really strong images. I'm a sucker for red sunsets so #1 is my favourite of the 2!

Thanks, I've done a re-edit on that. It was a bit of over-sharpening plus the effect of the sky behind.

Splaying out to the corners does occur, you can see it particularly in the motorbike shot I've added. I have a feeling that in a rectilinear lens this wide it's probably physically impossible for it not to happen. Some may find it objectionable, others will be able to live with it. I personally don't mind it at all, in fact I think it gives a nice dynamic look to images. Also, we are most likely going to use the extreme wide end of this lens in situations were the splaying effect won't be so noticeable. The jetty shot is a good example of how distortion-free the lens can be given the right conditions. There are no objects in the corners to display the splaying effect.

Wayne, these are just incredible shots! Maybe it is time for me to toy around with a 11-14mm

Ack! You've definitely improved it, but my wife is a Canon shooter, her birthday is in two months and she's seen this.

Nicely done, sir.

Are the trees leaning that heavily or is that from the super wide angle lens? That much distortion I don't think I could handle

You captured some nice light here.

Exactly what I was just wondering!
Or thinking it was a location with an unrelenting wind.

Beautiful images however!

Hi Scott, yes the trees actually are on quite a lean, that's what attracted me to them in the first place. The lean on the left hand tree is accentuated by wide angle distortion, but yes, it was leaning that way in the first place. If you look to the distant tree on the far left you can see more significant distortion on it as it is close to the edge of the frame where distortion is most pronounced and the camera was angled upwards to capture the sky.
I played with applying a bit of perspective correction to this image but decided to show it as is.
