My wife retired from teaching (for the 3rd time), and has taken an interest in my photography, so I got her a used 100-400 version 1 to use with my 7D, and coaxed her along. She's been shooting birds around our feeders from a 1st floor window off and on for several days, and among the usual portraits she's already come up with these two little gems. I've taken to calling the little Junco "birdzilla".
(I'll get to the hawk in a minute)

Our brave little Junco turns into . . . . . . . .

. . . . Birdzilla !!

She was in her spot yesterday snapping away at the Cardinals and woodpeckers and Goldfinches when I happen to notice out a window there was a hawk on the ground just past the bird feeders. I thought "wow, she's getting some hawk shots, and I don't have a one to show for years of shooting". When I asked if she was getting any shots of it she said "what hawk?", so I pointed it out to her. Suddenly "click,click,click,click,click"......"click,click,click,click,click", so I hustled upstairs to grab my 500mm and tried to get some shots from a 2nd floor window. Long story short, she had the better angle and shooting spot. I'm afraid I've created a monster. How will I keep up with her now? Here's her Red-shouldered Hawk . . . .

That 2nd shot is a winner. Great timing. Now you are going to have to get her better equipment and take her on those wildlife expeditions. Someone better still be working!!!

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and kind comments. I guess some of my jabbering about photography stuff sank in over time, or she's been paying more attention than I thought.
