I have been in one ice cave in Iceland and the route to get inside was quite scary and the guide was ultra careful about stepping on ice on the way in. Once inside it was a bit dicey as well.
Could you please give us more information on the safety aspects of your trips to these labyrinths?
Thanks for your comment. In my opinion this ice cave was relatively safe, but it is really quite hard to asses. So there is always certain risk involved when one enters such place. Firstly, I checked what was above me and how stable it was, then I entered the place. I also check how stable was ice underneath my feet. Generally the bigger the ice cave, the higher the risk that something will collapse or fall. Also, it is important to know how quickly the particular glacier moves as its movement may result in ice fall or cave collapse. Each ice cave is different and there is no general rule on how to asses the risk of its penetration.
