p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A7S for Still Photography

I don't do video and am thinking about Sony A7S for low light photography particularly at night and indoor. I'm currently using the Canon 5D Mark III and I'm fine with it except I want something a little more compact for travelling. I'm wondering if A7S is for still photographer and should I wait for the price to drop as the rumour the new A9 will be released soon.

I just purchased an A7s for similar reasons. I already own a high megapixel camera for print-work, so I enjoy the compact/quiet characteristics of the a7s. Its fun for street photography and has more than enough megapixels for most applications. If it were my only camera, I would have probably purchased the A7II.

I have yet to try it out for astrophotography, but I anticipate it will shine.

I don't think the price will drop much (even with the release of the a9), because of the cult following in the video world. My understanding is the A9 will be a high-megapixel camera to replace the a7r and, in that case, there will still be a strong market for the a7s.

It is your call whether you want to wait for the price to drop or not but I got the hunch that the rumored A9 will be designed more for better AF and/or more MP rather than for low light photography. Of course, nobody knows that for sure at this point but my answer to your question about the ability of the A7s to do still low light photography is a resounding "YES". ISO 12800 or 25600 shouldn't face this camera...

And of course, the silent shutter for street photography works like "magic". In my book, this is the currently ultimate camera for street photography, especially at night.

I was actually speaking with a friend who was considering switching from Canon to Sony and he was looking hard at the A7S, but his only reservation was print size. He shoots editorial imagery for high end publications and was worried that the native resolution wouldn't hold up well to printing large 9x13+ and heavy cropping. As an editorial photographer, you never really know how an Art Director will use your imagery (I'm an Art Director and can attest to this as I've abused images more than once and pushed them to their limits to get the copy space where it needed to be, etc.).

If your needs will be prints or high-resolution imagery for clients, etc., I'd say the A7S may not be exactly what you're looking for. But for personal use, web imagery, small prints (8x10, 11x14) of low light imagery for travel, etc., I'd say that the A7S is right up your alley.

I use my A7S almost everyday for still photography over my 5dm3, and I have no intention to use it for video.

I have the A7R and A7S, and I use the A7S when I can where resolution isn't an issue or in low light. For example, if I am shooting in casual situations where I know I will likely not need to blow up huge prints, the silent shutter and high ISO capability of the A7S is fantastic. And processing the smaller files in LR is faster too. I use the A7R where I think I may want to print very large or crop a lot, but the loud shutter really bugs me.

It all boils down to how large you print and how much you crop. I print up to 13x19 and don't crop with my style so the A7s is perfect. It's seriously a bring everywhere camera. You're not limited by the ISO most of the time so you can get shots that you previously can't (night shot stop down with decent shutter speed). I would say it's quite liberating.

How about sensor reflections? Is it an issue with A7s or is it much improved as in A7II?

I'm considering going from A7 -> A7s but sensor reflections would be a showstopper

I definitely don't see any on the A7s. And I'm well accustomed to sensor reflections on the A99.

It can be found for less than 1700€ on ebay, I find it's already a good value.

the 5Dc can easily print 13x19 with really good quality. That should allow for quite a bit of cropping and still good 8x10 prints.

I guess an A7r with A7s low light ability would be asking too much

I used to shoot Nikon before and since I sold it and bought the A7s I am never going back to a dSLR.

The size and weight different are just too big!

Right now my go to lens is the Voigtlander 40/1.4 and I also recently bought the FE 16-35/4 which is a really good performer although much bigger than any m-mount lens. It is the only zoom I own and the primary reason I bought it is for real estate work.

I would suggest you going with the A7s and some small primes. Right now I own the Voigtlanders 12/5.6, 21/4, 40/1.4 and 75/2.5 and they all work great IMHO. I also have a Leica 135/4 which takes great photos and it is still very compact for a 135mm.

Good luck and if you want to see some sample, just go to my Flickr: www.flickr.com/nampramos

Cheers!
