p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bonelli's Eagle

This captive Bonelli's Eagle was photographed during a raptor show at the Lowery Park Zoo in Tampa just before it rained. They are similar to the African Eagle and can be found in Africa, Asia and Europe. I was sitting in the front row which allowed for the nice tight head shots.

Morris, I wonder why you did not post a full bird shot? I see you were shooting around 6-feet with extremely slow SS. I know you used a flash but it did not seem to help improve detail

1 motion blur such nothing appears in focus

2 a little better than 1

3 not an attractive pose most of the image is soft

4 better detail of the top of the head....just not enough eye for me

5 Better than 4

6. in terms of IQ the best of the set

7. great eyes but the soft beak kind of cancels the great eyes

That looks like one formidable hunter. My guess as to why it was shot the way you did was to eliminate zoo/aviary elements. I love the look in 5...all business. I wish I understood the intricacies of flash the way you do....I'm at a total loss when it comes to that. Ted makes some good points, if you could do it differently, would you? Or do you like the artistry of the images more than attempting to get tip of bill to top of head all in focus?

Cool set of a rarely posted species Morris. Ted has some good suggestions. My picks are 4,5 and 7. #6 is sharp but the bird doesn't have enough head turn to engage the viewer imo. TFS this rare one.

Hi Ted,

There are no motion blurred images in this set, simply limited DOF as it was very dark and my old equipment is ISO limited or you would be complain of noise.

Also, a subject dose not have to be entirely sharp and you can move the viewers eyes around using DOF. We clearly have different taste and that's fine and one of the things that makes art interesting.

I appreciate your point of view. Please do not hesitate to comment.

The big challenge was the low light level and my old camera body that will produce annoying noise levels at high ISO so I had to shoot wide open. I like to shoot at around f8 to get more of the face in focus though I do like to use shallow DOF to place the viewer's attention on the eyes. I've never cared about a sharp beak, it's just an ugly appendage while the eyes are the entrance to the sole. I agree 5 is a scary stare.

Thank you Garry,
Someone will need to take over that role when my new lens arrives.

These are intimidating glares you've captured Morris. I like 4, 5, and 6 best of the bunch. I think you did well given the low light and required shutter speeds; my eye moves around appropriately enough.

Morris, you brought out the mean calculating personality of this raptor/predator!

Interesting comments and perspectives from both sides!!
Does this bird go by another name, because when I saw your shots I thought it was a Martial eagle, which I have seen in Africa.
