I’m not trying to pass this off as coming straight out-of-camera or anything. I don’t expect anyone to think that this is real. If it offends you, say so or just move along. If you like it, let me know...
Have a Great Day!

I like it! There I said it.

I don't believe that the measure of a good photo is how well it reproduces "reality" or that it even tries too. Rather, it is matter of how well it communicates something, either about the place, or the time, or the artist; or a combination of those. That doesn't exclude images that attempt to be faithful to "how it looked", because is an expression of the experience of the photographer. But it also doesn't preclude other expressions of the nature of the place or time, or what it evoked in the photographer, and that can involve -- or require -- intentional alteration of the image to highlight something, or try to evoke some reaction in the viewer. The only line that shouldn't be crossed is outright deception: misrepresentation of something as something it isn't or wasn't, with the intention to deceive.

It may or may not have been your intention, but the sliding around of the "expected" colors of this well known scene conveys, for me, a gritty, muscular impression of the place, and of canyon country in general. It isn't a foreboding, like representing a latent evil, but perhaps more a warning that this land is not to be taken lightly. But at the same time it is beautiful, and inviting. I guess, that's a combination that attracts some of us photographers to places like that!

(And I think, for the reasons above, I prefer the color version; the B&W is fairly conventional in comparison!)

Anyway, good show; it's nice to see a different take on a familiar scene.

Dave

Hey Zeph,

I am liking your take here on Horseshoe Bend. Both look nice, but I like your color choices in #1.

Not offended, I like the color best , but for the color version, -1 stop on the foreground seems to make it extra special .

Zeph,

I like your interpretation of the colors of the iconic Horseshoe Bend. It captures some of the sense of the place that I first enjoyed spending two plus hours there from predawn dark until full sunup.

One suggestion in your monochrome version: Crop sharply on one of the more interesting elements. It could be memorable.

Dave - I really like what you said. There's definitely a stark foreboding that is beautiful to see, but can be treacherous to embrace...Like when camping and you've exhausted supplies, there is only one choice, head for civilization

Thanks for your thoughtful comment...

The foreground looks way to bright compared to the sky for me.
I realize you processed it this way intentionally, and except for my tastes on that, I do think it is a nice image.

I'm B&W photo fan but your first one colorful photo looks awesome. Even if you edited it, it still looks great. Colors are not over-saturated like most HDRs, green, blue and red are well balanced. Contrast is good enough which gives a general feel of rocks and overall canyons environment. This kind of editing is only appreciated, I personally very enjoy looking at it without any "another too much saturation" feel.

I like the comp and sharpness/detail in #1. The colors just seem a touch cold to me. I really like the B&W - and I'm not normally a fan. Just love the gritty details here.

I do very much like the processing of the second image. However, the composition does bug me. I don't like the way the cliff extends into the river and onto the distant shore. It also feels a bit cut off on the lower left where the river exits the frame. Guess you needed to stand even closer to the thousand foot drop!

Considering there is no Lik-sized moon in the foreground, I found your disclaimer to be a bit un-necessary as far as "not SOOC" is concerned! Gorgeous images, however you arrived at them in post-production.

I strongly agree with Dave's eloquent paragraph about the grittyness of the image, however my only dislike is that the landscape nearest the horizon seems a bit brighter than the sky / clouds just above it, which to me is a tell-tale sign of GND / HDR work that would look much better with even the slightest bit of re-processing on the darker side.

This does not, of course, apply nearly as much (if at all to the B&W version, which I find to be a tonal delight to view...

I like it Zeph. I like the individualist interpretation of the scene.
