I generally dont do the smaller birds, but we were waiting for some bald eagles and this White Breasted Nuthatch presented himself

Nice Mark, but maybe a little short on detail ~ Ron

Nice pose Mark. The whites seem a little over exposed resulting in a loss of detail in the bird's breast. Also, notice the distracting elements behind the bird. Either moving to your right or left to eliminate that would help, providing the damn bird stays put as you move. What lens did you shoot with and at what settings?

THanks for the advice. I shot this with 1/1000 f/7.1 ISO 640 with a Tamron 150-600 and a Canon 7d mkii

Are you checking the histogram when you shoot? Do you have your camera set to show you blown highlights/whites?

Good advice. Having the highlight warning set will alert you and let you make exposure changes before shooting too many and missing out on getting it right. I rely on mine to warn me when I'm in a rush and not paying attention.

Nice advice by everyone. It appears the bird is in full sun. If that is true, the settings could be a whole stop or more overexposed. Maybe a 1/2000th or faster or iso 320 or so would have been accurate exposure.
