So I went out after a male painted bunting which was only a half hour away and it was there for 2 weeks. Of course , it had already left the area by the time I went for it.

Fortunately, I found a local red tail pair on the way home very close to my home. Shot handheld from leaning atop my wife's car.

Really impressive, Herb. I can hardly imagine slinging that 800 to follow this dude. That's a feat in itself. My only nit would be the violet tint of the blue in the 2nd and 3rd shots. I get that a lot so have to shift the color phase in the saturation control just a tiny bit to get it back like I want. It may not bother some folks, or they may not even notice it, but I'm really sensitive to blues for some reason.... maybe because it's my favorite color and I fixate on it.

Could easily be monitor differences too. In any event, I'd be proud to call these mine. Nice work.

The first is stunning Herb and the 3 and 4 are also top picks. While those buntings are beauties and I understand your desire to see and photograph one, these are a nice replacement.

WOW! I absolutely love the great light on the feathers, so much detail in the plumage at that angle in relation to the sun. Nice!

Isn't it infuriating that just when you get the chance to go the damn bird up and leaves? But your red tail, and what a red tail it has is pretty darn good too. I've been tempted to go look for that falcon but I don't relish the arctic temps we still seem to have....plus it may be bye bye now.
