p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Tenacity of the Bald Eagle

Bald eagles will sometimes fight to the death, especially over nesting territory. As our numbers of local bald eagles increase, so will territorial disputes as they usually require a mile apart between nests. Here is a short video of a recent bald eagle rescue performed by Ben Wurst of the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey. Both eagles had talons locked and were hanging for an unknown amount of time. Ben is in charge of restoring nesting habitat and he monitors and bands osprey nests throughout the state as well as working with peregrines and other raptors. Unfortunately, the outcome of this rescue was unfavorable for both eagles. Here's the video:

The shot is a reworked image from several years ago, captured from under an umbrella in the pouring rain.

Herb, thanks for the education on the territorial behavior of the eagles. The video was interesting. Nice photo of the eagles preparing to battle over the fish.

Great image, Herb.

When eagles lock talons, it almost becomes a game of chicken.

A very nice action shot Herb. Too bad about the other two eagles. Since they were fighting, I assume they were not a pair. Does that mean there are two unpaired eagles, or is there time for the remaining eagles to pair up before nesting season ~ Ron

Thanks for stopping by Henrik. It was interesting to see that it took 3 guys to pull the talons and birds apart.

I remember that, but that was more in the 70's and 80's I think. I don't know, are those guys still doing that in the city ?

I'm not sure of their nest status, but it's likely they are from two separate pairs.
