p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Valley of Fire: nooks and crannies

Last week I had to drive to Vegas on personal business, and on my way back, made quite a loop to visit one of my favorite parks. It was cloudy but warm and dry - perfect weather to explore the park, although there was no chance for a nice sunset /full moon shot I hoped for.
Below are several shots of larger and smaller caves, arches and potholes. All formations are nameless but still pretty interesting.

C&C welcome.

Sasha.

I like the next to last one. Great eye to catch that bit of tenacious greenery peeking out of the dry and hot environment.

Hey Sasha,

#2 and 5 are my favorites. A really nice job working the DR in #5. I would say though that the reds should be toned down in #2 through 5. Now in #1, the reds looks fine and natural. So just pull back on the other 4 to be more in line with the colors in #1 and these will be great.

Very nice series of images. The color and texture of the formations is excellent. My favorite is the next to last image,it tells a wonderful story - illustrating the past and the present.

The last one seems really special. The quality of light ... direct in the middle, bounce/reflected in the foreground, and shade in the background is really interesting. That rock in the lower left is a perfect addition to the composition and really leads me through the scene instead of just looking through a window. The texture of the clouds in the background are really nice and not overdone. Colors are super saturated but just how I remember this park looking. Really enjoyed.

John, thank you! There was a trick involved, I will write a separate post about it.

Thank you, Paul - you are right, climbing to the cave on the first (same as last) was a bit risky, but judging from the multiple "rock art", lots of folks did this climb before.

Thank you, John. I am a slow hiker, so have time to look around

I like the 4th shot the best. However, I think the first one has great potential if cropped differently. I find the sky and non-red background distracting. What do you think of this?

Jim, thank you!
I know that 2 to 5 may seem too saturated, but that is how I perceive it, and you know - I am very careful with this slider. In Valley of Fire, red is a bit more orange than regular Navajo sandstone, so I tried to bring this out. Perhaps #1 is not saturated enough

Thank you, Mark! I love it, too, but its a tough love, especially in a summer time!

Thank you, James. You are right, there is a story. There is also a footprint that I decided not to clone out.

Chris, thank you! I am glad you noticed the light on the last one, I experimented with it a bit.
