Yesterday was a chilly and clear day here in New York City. I visited the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge took what is now called the Long West Trail. Formally part the West Pond Trail which was severed by the West Pond Breach created by Hurricane Sandy. There is a study underway to decide the fate of the West Pond (Lagoon) and weather to restore to how it was pre-Sandy or leave the lagoon with a bridge over it. There is also a plan to create a smaller west pond and also a bridge over the breach. While we wait on bureaucracy, the breach widens. The good news is that the East Pond is back to it's former amazing place and about 1/2 the birds have returned to the West Lagoon. Yesterday was the first time I enjoyed being at a location we call the runway, an absolutely fabulous place for flight photography as well as juxtapositions like these.
Some changes in camera setup for me: The D300 matrix exposure is very reliable so I used aperture priority rather than manual exposure. Dialing in exposure compensation has affected my flash setup and I believe I've got that figured out for the next time. Following a question by a friend that works for Nikon, I decided to give 51 point 3D tracking a second try and it's working great for me. It must have been user error when I first tried it.
NYC for a BG. Wow. I should come for a visit sometime! I like the sky colour in the last. Looks like some good possibilities for future shoots.
Don't tell me that "beamer" was strong enough to light the buildings!!!
Don
I love the "habitat" you shoot in Morris...too bad I have to pay all those big tolls to get there ....there is something special having the NYC skyline juxtaposed with wildlife....glad to call this area home (sometimes ). The late afternoon shots are my favorite...love that light and mood.

Interesting perspective Morris. I have some snowy owl shots with Giants Stadium as a BGD. Many ops are available at the MEADOWLANDS too if you're looking for skyscraper BGDs.

If you come let me know and I'll be glad to show you around Don. For years I kept the buildings out of my shots and then realized how special it is to have them as the background. I don't need the beemer to light the buildings, Mr. Edison did it for me :-}

Thank you Eric,
JB NWR is a very special place. Some time when you are coming in for a show, let me know and we can do a morning or afternoon shoot before the show.
