p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New Flash: YN-600EX-RT

I haven't seen anything on this here so I thought I would start a thread. Yongnuo has finally released their 600ex clone. I have been using their st-e3 clone with my 600ex's for some time now and it has worked great. So when they released their flash, I ordered one right away. At under $200, it is less than half the price of the Canon.

Yongnuo website with spec details: http://www.hkyongnuo.com/e-detaily.php?ID=351

I just received the flash. It is well built, but not quite as well built as the Canon. They appear to have used a slightly cheaper plastic and the swivel head isn't as smooth. Aside from that, it looks and feels almost identical.

The flash works well. It has a couple of slave options that the Canon doesn't have. In turn, it appears to lack a few menu options that are present on the Canon and I haven't had time for a deep dive to see what they are. I can tell you that they aren't significant for my uses. YMMV.

One notable omission, the YongNuo does not include the filter holder or gels. If you use gels, you will need to add that to the cost. The Canon filter holder does fit the YongNuo. When the Canon uses the filters, the camera will automatically adjust the W/B to match. The auto W/B feature does not appear to be included in the YongNuo.

The YN does indeed recycle slightly faster than the Canon and appears to have a similar coverage. The YN is not quite as bright - though it is close. I didn't have the camera or flashes on stands so the light variations I saw could have been user error. My guess, however, is that it is slightly less powerful than the Canon.

The YN also has a beep confirmation that you may find annoying. I haven't checked yet to see if it can be disabled.

As per the problem reported by jjoejr, I did test in servo mode with my YN-ES-RT and it easily fired between 5 and 12 continuous shots - depending on the ISO and power settings. The 600EX performed identically in this respect. My conclusion is that the flash is not a major limitation for continuous shooting (and for that matter, the trigger isn't either).

I ordered the new 600ex yongnuo when it came out. Along with the hot shoe transmitter. The flash is powerful. I tested it on 1/64 and 1/32 second power on multishot speed. I stopped at 25 consecutive shots. Not one missed shot. Here's the problem. When I used transmitter as master and flash as slave, I only got about 2 or 3 shots out of 10 that were exposed. What is strange is that the flash fired but seemed out of synch with camera and photos were dark. I tried different variations with no success. Even tried transmitter with canon 600ex rt which was a friends unit. No success. Conclusion. Flash transmitter will not work correctly on a an older canon 1D mark IV. Returned unit and have canon units on order. Why do I need high speed? For hummers and songbirds inflight. Overall for the price the units are very impressive and easy to operate. The transmitter also has focus assist light which canon model doesn't. Wish it would have worked on my 5 year old mark iV. But didn't.

I'm using a pair of YN-ST-E2 with my three 600EX-RT, mostly with 6D and 1DX cameras. I haven't tried the YN-ST-E2 on my 1DIV. Maybe I'll do that when I get a chance...

My yn-e3 worked on my 1DIV with no problems, although I don't recall ever trying to use it for HSS. I'll try that out with my 6D when I post an update. I do recall that I had to do a firmware update on the transmitter. If you didn't do that, it won't work properly on some older models.

JC I used the new version yn-st-e3 radio controlled hot shoe mounted transmitter. With new yongnuo 600ex wireless flash. We tried it out on another 1D mark IV and it did the same thing. Was erratic. Units had updated firmware also. Contacted distributor and he said units were not tested for Mark IV. I was using ettl in high speed servo mode at very reduced power. When flash alone on hotshoe was tested it was awesome. Never missed a shot. And fired like a machine gun. Tried different combinations with transmitter and canon flash units also. Was erratic. Didn't trust it when using transmitter as slave. Also the customs options on yongnuo are reduced in comparison to the canon. But all in all for ettl or manual it's a helluva flash unit and powerful for 40% of the cost of the canon.

GC5 like you it worked great in single shot mode. But I bought them for high speed synch and reduced power high speed servo shooting. To be clear about my application. When shooting hummers or songbirds you only need to fire no more than 5 shots because the birds will be long gone in that time span. But the slave unit was firing but not synching with the camera. Only getting a few shots and rest were blacked out. Try your transmitter on hot shoe set to master. Flash on slave. Use ettl setting. Set camera to servo or single shot. Continous shooting. Be sure to lower flash power to 1/64th or 1/32 and fire a burst of at least 10 shots. You won't have a problem with losing power and recharge. Let me know what happens.

Oh one other thing. My canon flash units will be here Friday. Will setup and repeat same scenario and let you know what happens. Gonna be pissed if the canon units do same thing. But I spoke to tech support at canon and they setup a mark IV with 600 units and had no problem with continuous shooting at reduced power without missed shots.

GC5,

This is the first time I've heard of their ST-E3 clone! It has an AF assist beam? This sounds like the perfect solution for me, as the lack of AF assist on Canon's version was reason enough for me to not buy it. Does the AF assist work well? And the unit itself, overall? Where can I buy this little jewel?

Yongnuo sells them on eBay, but you can find them on Amazon too. They work well, subject perhaps to the problem reported by jjoejr. It does have an af assist light. The AF pattern doesn't always align perfectly with the camera's af points, but it is better than none. Many report that you can wiggle the transmitter in the hotshot to align the Af points with the pattern.

James here's a link to the guy I bought it from. Stands behind his product. And will refund if not satisfied. Contact name is "Jason". You do realize it comes from hong kong? But it was shipped fast and promptly with no problems.

Focus I'm not an expert but have used the optical system of the 580's with st-e2 in different modes. Having played with the yongnuo I have a head start as it's almost identical to the canon 600 format and menu's. Granted I use them on birds in manual and ettl in normal mode and HSS. But I will give you my opinion when they arrive after testing them. Curious to see if the canon units will rip off as many continuous shots as the yongnuo at low flash power.

They should be close, but the YN does specify a faster recycling. With low power flashes you can go a long way on either one.

GC5 all I need is at least 5 at 1/32 or 1/64th. And I was getting that with my old 580's. Reason I need wireless is when optical sensor is facing sun and tilted up towards my master unit, flash units won't fire. Missed a bunch of hummer shots because of it.

Anyone have links to reviews of these YN600RT units? I had some trouble digging them up with a few google searches. I can't use strobes often enough to justify buying a the canon 600RT, but for $200 these look pretty appealing.

you buy from HK or ebay and if you have an issue you throw it away as there is zero support?

I use flash all the time when out photographing birds - Manual and ETTL with HSS. Question. You can mount these on a flash bracket without any cords and they work via RC, correct, but only on the newer bodies like the 7D2, 5D3 and 1Dx for example, correct. Can you control the flash settings via the Canon camera menu? I have not looked at camera mounted flashes in years, so not well versed with all these newer units.

Thanks...Al
