p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The French Alps - A Day Trip

Last month I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Switzerland for work. It was unique in that the conference stopped at lunch midweek, loaded up 8 buses worth of physicists and drove to Chamonix, France. (Apologies to the poor unsuspecting tourists suddenly surrounded by a few hundred scientists!). My wife and I opted to ride a cable car - which holds the record for the highest vertical ascent, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m - to the summit of Aiguille du Midi. The weather could not have been more perfect and at 13,500 feet, the view was stunning. Because of the various platforms built at the summit, there is actually a lot of compositional opportunities. Here are some of my favorites. Constructive criticism always welcome!

Note: because this was a work related trip, I opted not to bring my usual kit (5DMKII and lenses) and rented a Sony a6000 with the 16-50mm lens. It was my first experience with a mirrorless camera and I was blown away by the quality!

These are terrific, Chris. I was there two years ago, had amazing conditions as well. Definitely one of my top ten experiences in life.

Great shots, hard to believe you can just ride a cable car up to get a view like that. Are those people on the ridge climbers with technical gear or can anybody just get off the platform and trek?

Thanks JohnC! Yeah, it sure beats climbing up to 13,500 feet The hiking seemed pretty accessible to people. That being said, everyone had on crampons, was carrying ropes and ice axes. Definitely need to have a little experience I imagine...

Wow! It is blowing my mind that you can just easily take a cable car up to this view! Amazing. The craggy nature of the peaks there are really special. This looks like a skiers heaven! I don't really like a lot of hand of man in my images, and therefore #2 is my favorite. Although the black and white treatment of the first really adds to the drama.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, normally I wouldn't have any problem removing the human element in the images, but for the B&W one in particular, I felt they provided a sense of scale that was needed.

Beautiful work Chris. I really like the light, shadows and texture you've captured in the snow.
Very nice work!!

Yep, at ISO 100 that A6000 can smoke any Canon sensor! Any landscape photographer who doesn't really need the highest ISOs or super-shallow DOF, doesn't need to bother with full-frame anymore, Sony's 24 MP 1.5x sensor is truly phenomenal.

I've tested the Sony A6000, the Pentax K-3, and the Nikon D5300, all which share different "takes" on this 24 MP Sony sensor. I think I'm in love!!!

Gorgeous images, by the way. Love the sharpness and tonality, and of course the locale is stunning!
