Stormy Sunrise captured from our balcony overlooking St Augustine Beach. B&W conversion using Nik SFX Pro.

Hi John...

That is one beautiful photograph!

You've done an excellent job on the black and white conversion with a full tonal range that even Ansel Adams would probably appreciate.

Thanks
Tom

Sorry, Tom, couldn't agree less. This is a wonderful scene but this image suffers from extreme contrast settings. Take another look at Ansel's stuff.

Hey John,

I totally love this shot. What awesome clouds, and what a moody scene. The B&W conversion for me works great. Really good work here.

Maybe Jeffrey is correct and this would like better with less contrast. To my eye this looks super. Very interesting, very different, a strong composition which pulls your attention and the image still leaves lots to contemplate.

I would think about cropping out the land and even the water. The clouds need nothing else.

Thanks all

Jeffrey, I did look at reducing the contrast somewhat and it did open up the grasses and plants in the foreground but it also had the effect of reducing the separation in the rain bands at the horizon as well as the some separation and over layering in the clouds. It was the drama and extreme range of light that drew me to capture this image in the 1st place. At this point I have not been able to produce a lower contrast version that still gives me what I felt and saw that morning.

Regards

You are thinking "global" adjustments. Processing localized areas would bring the image to what Jeffery is suggesting. Think masks.

Beautiful shot as it is. I am sure you can make it better by local adjustments as others have suggested.

No was not thinking "globally" was actually using dark #3 fromTk luminosity masks panel to reduce the contrast.
Will continue to play but may need to limit the selection by hiding portion of the mask by using the brush
Thanks

John,

Damm fine shot as it stands. Not usually a fan of B&W but this one really grabs me. Don't know anything about PP so not sure it some adjustments would improve it or not, however, you have NOTHING to be ashamed of as it stands.

It's a breathtaking image, but you can always spot an SFX conversion. I'd straighten the horizon then print it!

Wow!
That is the sky I dream about.
My monitor is calibrated. I say leave it as is.
Bravo, John!

Could you please explain further? I love the image and I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

Thanks.

Oh wow that has so much character, the B&W conversion works very well too too to show the ominous clouds and the radiant light coming through the gap

Thanks all,

The clouds and dramatic range of light found in North Florida is one of the many reasons that were thinking about making St Augustine our home for retirement. It seems that almost without fail, that as we approach the Florida line, tropical clouds will appear on the horizon while back in Georgia we have more of the high altitude haze. In this case we had thunderstorms developing offshore that lingered into the morning. For my part I just had to get up in the early numbers and point the camera in the right direction.

Regards.

A question. I will preface it with I like the shot but do have a concern. It seems like there is a line below the threatening clouds that enhanced or exaggerated thru Photoshop. The separation seems just to clean. I could be very wrong, again, I like the shot.
Regards,
Larry
