Thanks Scott, Jase and Rhikant.

Scott, I am looking forward to your effective reach comparison against 5DIII similar to the 7D one you had done with 500/600. Indications are that this will be in my shopping list in the near future.

I should not have done this in a hurry, the iso's, shutter was different. but here it is. Hard to tell which is best. Centre ~10% crop on 7d2

When I look at these the 5diii/1.4x looks best (3rd), then 7d2 (1st), then 5diii bare (2nd). But they are close, which surprised me.

I will have to repeat the test with on manual settings.

7d 2 f4 iso 6400 1/250

5diii same spot, cropped to same view, iso 2500, 1/320, f4

5diii same spot, with 1.4xiiii, cropped to same view f4, iso 4000, 1/250

Here are some shots with the 6D (50/1.8) and 7DII (35/2.0IS) at ISO 3200 and 12800. I'm not very good with DPP so these are just straight batch for both. Any thoughts?

Those twin Digic 6s can sure chew through a battery. I'll have to pick up a couple more of those fancy LP 6n soon.

I've noticed that the batteries seem to last only about 1/2 as long with the 7D2 as with the 7D (original model.) But, so far that is my only disappointment with the Mark 2.

posted high ISO shots from my 7D2 i picked up this morning. ISO 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800 and 160000. Shot in RAW and loaded into DPP; moved the luminance and color noise sliders to 0. Exported highest quality. I set the images so they can be downloaded.

That ISO 160,000 looks amazing! Almost like ISO 16,000!

Seriously: Nice comparison -- thanks.

Interesting fact 1:

25 shots before slowing with my slow sd 35mb/s sd card. And 11 seconds to clear. Vs my 5diii stopping at 9 with 15s to clear.

31 shots to lexar 1000 cf with < 4s to clear when full. vs about 25/5 on 5diii.

The buffer is definitely bigger and clears much faster to the sd card. This is great. Now I can actually use my sd card when my cf card is full.

Thanks for posting! Looks great! I tried the 7D II at PhotoPlus in NYC today. Very solid camera!

Battery life seems significantly shorter to me too. But I had the gps on. I have turned it off because the life seemed too short. I did not measure yet but I will update after my day with the polar bears tomorrow.

I was hoping that they'd put a more efficient GPS unit in than what they'd used for the 6D

I don't think I'll be getting over 2000 full size RAW on one battery like the 7D. battery pack on the way. Battery life small price to pay for overall performance boost.

I assume you can disable the GPS? It's not something that I'll ever need.

Scott, what size cards were you using for this test?

Thanks...Al

Yes. And, in fact, Canon recommends leaving it off to prevent battery drain when not needed. The GPS will continue to operate even if the camera is turned off. So it is recommended to leave it disabled until it is needed.

At a quick glance, I'd say the 7D Mark II ISO1600 files are comparable to a 1DX's ISO5000 files. The 7D Mark II at ISO1600 has slightly less noise than the 1DX at ISO5000, but detail retention is also considerably worse on the 7D Mark II than the full-frame champ. If we factor in colour acuity, the 1DX likely moves ahead a bit more.

If I recall correctly, the 1DX at ISO6400 was very slightly better than my former 1D Mark IV at ISO3200. Meaning, 7D Mark II at ISO1600 is probably just a tad behind the 1D Mark IV at ISO3200 by my methods/preference.

This is just an observation using the sensors I'm currently most familiar with, and this doesn't factor in reach or resolution - as such it'd be unfair to compare the high-ISO performance of a full-frame vs 1.3/1.6x crop body directly.

Thanks for sharing/posting your 7D Mark II sample images everyone - hope everyone has some decent weather upcoming to head out & take some great photos! (I'm told by a very trusted source that the 7D Mark II packs quite the punch in terms of AF ability so I'm expecting lots of very happy new 7D Mark II owners on this forum in the next little while.)

I'm with you, I was wondering if I just got a bad battery, but I love it so far, but will be ordering a 2nd battery and grip today.

NOTE: **Not a comparative test**

Weather is terrible in the Northeast but here are a few initial shots at long range. Used normal work flow, including noise reduction. Substantial crops. AF is quick and accurate. Files out of camera at higher ISO have some noise (shocking!) but it was easy to deal with so far.

Hey Scott - are you up in Churchill aka the Polar Bear Capital?
GPS and cold weather certainly would shorten your battery life.

Those pictures were shot by yours truly (wrinkled old guy with sparkly Michael Jackson gloves!) back in 2009 with a brand-new Canon 7D ... show us a few of what you get with the 7DM2 ... ;-)

I did want someone shouldn't do and take a new camera to a paying job. I paired it with the Tamron 150-600mm for most of the day while photographing marching bands. Ford Field was likely a bit dark for a 6.3 lens but I cranked the ISO up.

The very old 300mm f2.8L (non IS) worked flawlessly on new body.

I'd say my technique using the big lens without a grip was not good after I became tired. It was a long day with 49 bands. I'm glad a grip comes tomorrow.

A few quick notes, I did almost 10K of photos on Saturday, I ran though two of the E6 batteries and the new E6N during the day.

The photos below are right out of the camera and just resized.
