p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Considering a Pentax K-3?

I just posted the first part of my review on the Pentax K-3 on my blog. The review is written from a real world use perspective and concentrates on ergonomics and image quality as well as features and build quality.

Some highlights:

APS-C 24 megapixel sensor with no anti-alias filter
very good high ISO performance
good color rendering
very solid build with a magnesium alloy weather resistant body
excellent ergonomics, hard switches for important functions and fewer sub-menus.

If you've been curious about the Pentax K5 you can check out my write-up at www.foto-gizmo.blogspot.com

Personally, I like it when FM members post their impression/review, rather then using FM as a platform to send me to their blog. I like the way Jordan Steele posts things here. He generally posts 60-80% of what is on his website review, that way he is contributing to FM but if people what to see a little more, the link is there.

Again, just my opinion, as other folks don't seem to mind.

If you had seen any of my other reviews you would know that I usually post about half of it on FM and invite readers to the blog if they are interested. This one was particularly long so I didn't have time.

I was intrigued by Pentax DSLRs and I think the K3 has a Sony sensor so I assumed the IQ would be excellent. However I am not familiar with the Pentax Lens lineup. How do they compare with Canikon/Sony in terms of IQ and price etc?

The biggest strength and main unique point in the current lens lineup is the limited series lenses. Excellent build quality, compact, sharp.

Having never used the Sony glass I can't make a comparison, however I think the two Pentax lenses I have, the HD-DA 15MM F4 and the 70MM 2.4 perform beautifully. Color rendering on both is excellent. I don't do any pixel peeping, I'm not sure what I would be peeping at, but to my eye at 100% on a 27" monitor the resolution, especially on the 70MM is great. I haven't used the 15MM for more than a few frames yet.

My system for assignments is Canon. If I was so inclined it might be interesting to do a head to head comparison using the Canon 85MM 1.8 and the 24MM 2.8 IS vs. the Pentax lenses, but the crop factor of the Pentax might confuse the results, besides I am not so inclined . I think the Pentax purchase was a good one, and if I didn't need the larger print capabilities of full frame and the TS-E lenses, I would probably replace the Canon system with the Pentax.

The attached photo was shot with tripod mounted Pentax K3, Sigma 18-35MM 1.4 Art lens. 2 seconds at F4.5, ISO 400
