p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A neat bug

I'm baaaaack! Back from visiting our son in Boston. We had a great time, but I didn't get much shooting done. We did go whale watching, and we did get to the NE Aquarium, so I will be posting some shots when I get time to process them.

I went to the garden to pick tomatoes and field peas Friday. For a change I did take the camera with macro lens mounted, and a flash too. You will see some of those shots soon - I hope. BUT yesterday I was shelling peas at the kitchen counter when I noticed a small, fuzzy insect trying to escape the pile of unshelled peas. It was less than 1/4" long. I watched it for a while thinking it was a neat looking bug, when my , (at times), slow working mind finally registered the fact that I should shoot the d*&m thing.

So I shot the bug on the kitchen counter, which is white. This little bug is smaller than I thought because it piles tiny garden debris on it's back - either for camouflage, or protection, or maybe both.

These aren't great shots, but I thought they were interesting enough to post. As always, C&C appreciated, and exif should be attached ~ Ron

This is the very first frame I shot, ad is probably the best of the lot. Your opinion may differ... ;)

Amongst the debris on it's back are what appears to be other insect exoskeletons. I don't know if they are from prey, or it's outgrown exoskeletons.

Another view of what appears to be an exoskeleton.

Very cool. An arthropod version of a hoarder. Have not seen nor heard of such as strategy on terra firma. Like a terrestrial caddisfly. Glad you shared these Ron. Quite interesting.

That is soooooo cool! A formidable set of pincers to say the least. Glad you didn't snack on it while shelling the peas.

Weird, wild stuff. I was going to say caddisfly larvae until I realized it was terrestrial. Nice images, sharp, focus is in the right place. Next time, consider a more natural setting or at least a colored bg.

Thanx Eric. It was so small that I would probably not even known I ate it - unless it was crunchy...

Very cool shot!

Often send my wife links of neat images on FM, but this one NOT: I can see the corners of my garage plastered with printouts of this!

Kidding aside, your detail is amazing!

Thanx Karl. It appears that both Birdie and Acer got the ID corred - a Lacewing larvae. It is also know as a aphid lion, junkbug, and several other names. The stuff on it's back is mostly the remains of it's victims...

What a shambling mound of horror! Glad I am not its size for sure. It's the stuff of zombie movies. Have you checked your bedroom for more?
