p.1 #1 · Lens Mount Slop

This could get lost amongst the D2X posts, but here goes anyway. Yesterday I noticed a little slop in the lens mount with the camera. I can physically turn the lens while mounted to the camera. I’m not sure I can put a distance in the amount of turn, but I’ll say that it is enough to feel it. Camera is a D1h, lens 80-200 f/2.8 (2 ring D model). I just mounted my 28-70 f/2.8 on the camera, and get the same thing. Lenses stay flush with the body. Is this normal?

Never get the “err” message. Now that I think about it, I seem to recall this same thing with my D100. I was in the middle of shooting a football game when I felt it, and I thought “oh no”. Sounds like I can "fughetaboutit"

Really, I don't notice any play with my S2. What happens sometime, when a heavy lens (like the 28-70) hangs from your neck , the screws in the lens may come loose after a while. I keep a set of screwdrivers in my bag.

Another thing that happens, my neck will get sore. A trip to the massage parlor helps

I've always had a little play in my D1x mount, never been a problem

I think that little bit of play is there on purpose. So that when shooting in "extreme" conditions (i.e. Really hot weather) the metal has room to expand. I don't know if this theory is right, but thats what I've always figured.

That "slop" is due to the design of the camera's locking pin and the groove in the Lens's mount that the pin locks into to keep the lens from undoing itself by accident. I believe the system is designed with a certain amount of play incorporated into its tolerances.

If it's excessive play with all lenses, then probably the locking pin on the camera needs to be replaced due to wear. If it's only happening with one or two lenses, then the mounting flange on the lens should be replaced.

Wow. Thanks for all the excellent feedback. I just happened to see these responses. I didn’t get the email notifications I requested for this thread, so didn’t realize there were any more posts.

The play is very small on my D1h, and is even smaller on my D100. Same amount of play with all lenses. I’m not going to worry about it any more.

I've got a D100 with the sigma 150-500. I was getting some "slop". Tightened up the srews on the lens, and it was tight again.
