It’s a well-known fact that exposure to community violence and crime derives problematic behavior and vice versa. A few years ago, women who lived in public housing were asked to participate in a survey by giving information regarding their history of substance use. The final results confirmed the undeniable relationship between drug use disorder and domestic, gun-related, and other forms of violence. Most of them were diagnosed with depressive, anxiety, and mood disorders, which makes it more likely to abuse substances or to have a relapse during recovery. Women who witness crime definitely need specific support and prevention programs, through culturally appropriate interventions.
