She has never stepped in front of a camera before (except selfies) A lot of coaching here but she did a great job I think.

Nothing but using the sun as a rim light for all these. First time using only natural light and no reflector or strobe so let me know what you think.

Thanks

I think one thing to examine here is that in every posted shot you have a vertical subject largely centered in a horizontal frame with a large amount of bokeh'd out blur that isn't really contributing to the composition. Even in shots like 4 where she's kind of on the 1/3, you've still just got a lot of extra room that's not adding anything, unless you're shooting with thoughts of overlay or type space.

I think the third and last shots offer the best combinations of expression and pose in the set.

Train tracks are dangerous, and while they seem endlessly appealing to photographers for some reason, its probably a bad idea. Here's the most recent case of a photographer dying during a photoshoot: http://petapixel.com/2014/06/20/photographer-missouri-hit-killed-amtrak-train-photo-shoot/

I like the lighting a lot. Reminds me of early 70s style fashion photography.

Beautiful model, poses work (for me anyhow) in number 1 and number 5 the best.

Overall I like number 1 the best.

Evan: Thanks for the critique.. I always appreciate it. I agree on them being centered now that you say it. Maybe I will relook at the cropping.

Mongrel: Thanks for that in #1 that is exactly what I was going for, although not as much in the others. Thanks

Ryan G

p.s. Train tracks.. This is a decommissioned track that has been out of service for 3+ years, but that's crazy about the train link. Sorry to hear. Thanks for the warning.

I hadn't heard about this. That happened just a few miles from me. Also, sadly, in Sedalia there is the Katy Depot which has a totally unused track that is great for pics.

I like the pix.
Seems like there was a thread about train track photos and I read some other articles after I googled...Bottom line is stay off the tracks. There were even some train companies that were aggressively fining people even on decommissioned tracks. Seems that the deaths have made them decide on a 100% stay off policy.
I can understand both sides of the argument.

Great shots. Love the negative space and the bokeh. To me it adds, not detracts from the images! After all, most of these are environmental portraits....

All look nice including the space as I think it works with the surroundings. This is a look very popular today. Sure she loved them.

Those tracks looks very shiny for them to be decommissioned. I would think that there would be a fairly heavy coating of rust on them and these just don't look like that. Of course, the sun's angle is reflecting in your direction which could be the reason they look shiny. Always be extremely careful around tracks. The noise from a train as it approaches is very quiet so you wouldn't hear it easily. Most of the train's noise radiates out the sides for what it is worth.

You need to work on your posing. She essentially has one pose with her left hand up by her head and one pose with her arms down by her side (I count the thumbs in the pockets down on the side).
