p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Few From Summer Backpacking

Hi all,

I wanted to share a couple from some backpacking trips I've made this summer.

First, this frame is from Sequoia National Park, with a splash of mountain pride against evening alpenglow over Emerald Lake.

This frame was shot on the rim of Crater Lake--is it normal for Oregon to still be snowy in July? When I hit the trails at the Three Sisters, Green Lake was still frozen over.

This last frame is from just outside Yosemite in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, showing Banner Peak over Thousand Island Lakes at sunset. Two days later we were hit with a storm system that pelted us with hail for three miles until we found refuge at Vogelsang High Sierra Camp.

Cheers!

Hey Joey,

You have some cool shots here. My favorites are in reverse order from what you have them posted. #3 is my favorite, Ansel Adams Wilderness is a really sweet place to backpack and shoot in. Your #2 shot is nicely done also with the stars.

Your #1 shot is halfway to being the best shot of the group. The sky is what really hurts the shot, it's too overexposed. A good rule of thumb with reflection shots, is the non reflected area (sky and peaks) should match the reflected area. Technically there is a 2 stop difference between them. But visually, our amazing brains and eyes do an amazing blend in our minds, so we visually wont see the difference unless you really look for it. But the camera isn't that smart, it doesn't put together a scene like our brain is capable of. So that's why for years when shooting reflection shots we would use a 2 stop ND grad to balance the light. Now... it's usually don't in photoshop. So I would suggest reworking #1, underexpose the sky and peak, lose the blown out highlights you have there, and get them to match closer what the reflection shows in detail and color.

Three great images.
#1. I agree with what Jim was suggesting. If you haven't bracketed double process the raw file.
#2. Terrific shot. My favorite
#3 Another great image. Love the mid ground details.

Thanks for the advice. I actually have quite a few frames of #1 as I was keeping a close eye on the histograms but it seems like I should indeed pull it down some more.

I like the first two the best.
Third one seems very purple and doesn't take me as much as the first two in general.
The first one does have an issue with the top part being processed to look a bit blown out or not quite right though, if that can be fixed up, that would be an awesome shot.

Actually I like #3 the best!
I might do a pano crop off the bottom to remove the mushy corners.
If the color balance is an issue, you can certainly make it less purple. Depends what you saw and what you like. Maybe brighten the distant mountain range a bit?
