Okay - I am SURE this doesn't belong in the people forum, but I couldn't find an appropriate area to post this question, and since this is my 'home' forum, I figured I'd ask here. I am looking for the best laptop for editing on the go. I run LR4 and Photoshop CS6. I want a great monitor, fast computer, something that can run these 2 programs, Bridge, browsers, etc simultaneously without missing a beat. I want a monitor that has amazing color. Basically, I want to be able to do all the stuff I do at home while I'm traveling without any glitches. I asked on my Facebook page and have received 3 separate recommendations - Alienware, Lenovo Thinkpad W530, and Dell Xps 15. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of these options? Would you recommend one over the other or something else entirely? Budget is not an issue - I just want something that will work well and not give me a migraine. Thanks guys!

ETA I am not going Mac, so no Macbook Pro suggestions please. :P

I'm a Mac guy, so I'm out of this one. But I do think that Mac is to PC as Nikon is to Canon. It doesn't really matter that much, tiny differences that lean both ways. You definitely will want a laptop that works seamlessly with your home computer.

Get a MacBook Pro with retina display. It's a workhorse with the best screen on a laptop. It's expensive, but Macs tend to "just work", but you will need to get used to the os (which is great in my opinion).

You definitely want a laptop that has a separate SSD for running the programs. A 128gb would likely be sufficient, but I'd go for a 258gb just for the future. And my old eyes would not last long on most laptop displays, so you might want to get one capable of running a large IPS display. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop as my main compter and run a Dell 2410 monitor when I'm at home. Just disconnect the monitor when on trips. Works pretty well.

MacBook Pro Retina 15". It is the best-performing Photoshop portable on the market, and its battery life is better than just about every recommendation you've received. I'll probably pick one up at the end of the year.

If you insist on a Windows-only PC (Retina MBP runs Windows or MacOS), I would go Lenovo. I also recently picked up a Surface Pro 2 (Microsoft) and like it very much. The screen might be a little small for your taste though (on the Surface), but the tablet functionality is really nice for image processing. Both the Surface and Lenovo products are pretty well built, reliable, and are roughly comparable in weight to the MacBooks (if not in other areas).

I've had overwhelmingly bad experience with recent (e.g., post 1998) Dell products. Alienware is an independently branded subsidiary of Dell that makes gigantic, overpowered, overweight computers with lots of juvenile-looking plastic trim pieces that supposedly look cool. I wouldn't spend my money on a Dell that looks even stupider than the normal plasticky fare that company normally churns out. A few reviews and performance tests for your consideration.

http://laptops-and-notebooks.findthebest.com/compare/135-830/M18x-vs-MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-with-Retina-Display-mid-2012 (The AlienWare notebook in this comparison weighs 11 lbs and has 1 hour shorter battery life than the MBP)

In this test, the MBP places second or first in just about every category of performance that doesn't test multiple cores. Look at the Photoshop and Lightroom benchmarks; the MBP outperforms a far more expensive multicore workstation. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7603/mac-pro-review-late-2013/7

This review compares MBP battery life to various computers. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2426359,00.asp

Oops... sorry... didn't see the "I won't go Mac" disclaimer.

Hey Lisa I just bought a Toshiba X75-A7195 from Costco. This is a MONSTER MACHINE, 256GB SSD, 1.5 TB HD, 1920x1080 17" FHD screen, GTX 770 3GB VC, i7 w/32GB of ram & and a Blue Ray burner. It weight just a tad over 7lbs. and has room for another HD for a scratch drive for PS. I got CS5 and LR5 on it, it flies...all for $1899...

There is a reason most IT people that I know use macbook pros and install linux and windows on them in addition to OSX. They are the best built laptops in terms of material and engineering quality that I know of - there is almost zero keyboard flex, the trackpads are responsive but not overly so and smart enough to actually ignore extraneous fingers touching them, the screens are brilliant (particularly these new retina displays), and the batteries last for ages, the chargers are small and not ungainely bricks, all of the USB ports are USB3, thunderbolt is faster than anything else, the battery connectors break away if someone trips on the cable, and they just don't break down and get slugged down in garbage malware like the windows operating system does. Further, if my laptop breaks I can just take it to the apple store and have them work on it, calling in I speak to people who give a flying froot loop about me and are actually willing to help, and if you get a lemon laptop (3 or more problems over the course of the first year) they will just straight up replace the laptop.

If you have the money, Apple Macbook Pros are the best all around laptops period. Sure, dedicated workstations with pro graphics cards may have more power but at the cost of mobility, build quality, and severely limited battery life.

If you don't have the money, Toshiba builds the most reliable laptops but their trackpads suck and their chassis are weak plasticy toys.

Experience: 4 years running a department of a major university's IT infrastructure on my own working with all assortment of laptops and desktops (70+).

If you want a good monitor, you really gotta go with retina, sadly. If you can live without it, or don't mind bringing along a separate ips monitor, go with anything else. Or just wait until you get home to do all your color correcting.

I'm in the same boat as you are, but looking at some older generation laptops. Currently I would be able to bring along another monitor, but later that would be a hassle so I should just bite the bullet and get a Mac. I just really hate the OS.

I run both systems PC for my Desktop MacBook Pro for my laptop. I rarely use my desktop as the MacBook Pro is that good. At some point I will switch completely. With that being said the Dell M3800 is arguably one of the best PC laptops out there. The M3800 is as powerful as the Mac and has an equally as good screen if you get the QHD 3800x1800 version. Downsize is the price is high.

Lisa this is an option worth exploring.

You can run Windows on a machine designed for graphics + the option to test out Mac OS ...

Lisa - I know this is not in your list, but from a workshop, I know Renee Robyn uses ASUS, and she does serious editing.

I have a Dell XPS 15 with 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM and since getting it, have done away with my desktop completely. The resolution is amazing, and PS6 and LR5 just fly...

Make sure you get something to calibrate the screen. I use the Colormunki and it matches prints exactly. I also carry an external 1TB usb 3.0 harddrive to store images on. The entire system weighs under 5 pounds and it is quite durable and easy to transport.

In the end, I'm having my computer guy build me an ASUS from scratch with a large SS drive and lots of RAM. Cannot wait to get it. No Macs - not interested.

If you get the Macbook Pro Retina -- get at least 8gb of memory. I use tethered with Capture One and D4 (fast) or D800 (a bit slower). And the flash drive boots up incredibly fast.

You will have to share with us how it compares to your desktop at home doing same tasks. Data such as times would be better than it flies. It flies doesn't mean anything as the Wright Brothers flew as well.

Additionally please share the hardware configuration.

Thanks

Yay, someone else who's not a Mac person. I was going to buy a Mac once, but instead I decided to buy a comparable PC . . . and a small car. . . and a vacation in Europe.

Laptops are fantastic for photo editing but they're disguised a bit. There are a whole bunch of laptops designed for gamingthat are absolute workhorses and will run PS and LR without breaking a sweat. They're not marked for multimedia like the Macs are but they'll do anything and everything you need and look gorgeous to boot (computer pun :-) ). Typically they will handle upgrading much more fluidly than a Mac ever can so in 3 years you can drop in more RAM, swap a better vid card, and a new processor without having to spring for another new laptop.

The best part is that you can still afford a flight to Milan afterwards!

Asus G75. If you don't go MacBook, this is what you need. Beast of a laptop. 2.4ghz Core i7, 16gb, 17" screen, various hard drive options (I have a 256gb SSD and a 750gb standard), plus various other things.

Here you go: http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/G75VW/
