Thank you guys! I totally forgot I started this thread - I am sorry! I didn't mean to drop off the face of the earth. In the end, I had a laptop custom built for me and I LOVE it. Runs bridge, CS6, and LR5 without a hitch and the colors match up perfectly to my desktop. I edited some pics while we were on vacation as a test run. It's my new traveling buddy!

Lisa, did your laptop come with a spec sheet? I'm curious about building a travelling setup and this sounds like exactly what I'm looking for as well. What did you use for colour calibration on the laptop screen?

So many people tout the MacBooks and the people in the stores. I took my ipad mini in to the store as I could not get my newest emails. I had to wait for about 45 minutes for a tech and then she worked on it for about 40 more minutes and couldn't get it to work, even with the help of a tech right next to her. She decided that I had to take it home and WIPE the memory and reinstall everything after backing it up. She sent me instructions in an email on how to do it.
I took the ipad mini home and in 5 minutes I downloaded the Yahoo Mail app and it has worked perfectly ever since. Why couldn't the techs work " outside of the box" and see another solution?

For what its worth, I am using an HP Elitebook 8570W laptop at work with an Intel 3830QM CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, a Quadro K2000M GPU and 256GB SSD. This is the "mobile workstation" option that most engineers use in the company. It is a top of the line machine, very fast, and would make for a very nice portable photo editing workstation if you can justify the price ($3,000+). With the docking station it can drive two monitors and I believe the Quadro GPU will allow a full 10-bit/channel connection if you have a professional monitor that uses 10-bit

I don't know if the HP laptops are different from HP's desktops, but I had an HP desktop fail just after the warranty ran out and took it in to a place to have it fixed. The motherboard had failed on it. The tech tried to find a motherboard and finally did, but it would have cost 2/3rds the cost of a new machine.
HP uses a unique motherboard on every model of their desktops which can not be substituted with another.
I ended up buying a much better Asus at a very reasonable price to replace it.
Two different computer technicians recommended the ASUS as one of the best off the shelf computers made.

*****sorry, didn't see this was a three year old thread **********

Lisa,
It is easy to replicate hardware specs across laptops, so personal taste comes into play evaluating the screens, resolution (4K?) , touch pads, painting devices, and keyboard, and size. It is very easy to replace an optical DVD drive if you want with additional SSD as well.

I am rather supris d that you are still using LR4??
I would recommend moving up to the standalone version6 LR. You might be surprised how much closer you can get gpbefore you need to move over to PS for finishing. Specifically the healing brush, adjustment. Rush improvements and gradient filters would likely be appreciated.

I would be curious.... I know, you show only your fabulous finished work here on FM. But when you meet with clients what level of proofing PP have ou done to get their final selections from a shoot. I can't imagine you completely PP as we see on FM as the proofs.

BR,
Guy

If you want a good monitor, you really gotta go with retina, sadly. If you can live without it, or don't mind bringing along a separate ips monitor, go with anything else. Or just wait until you get home to do all your color correcting.

I'm in the same boat as you are, but looking at some older generation laptops. Currently I would be able to bring along another computer monitor, but later that would be a hassle so I should just bite the bullet and get a Mac. I just really hate the OS.

Thank you swordfishphoto for your reply. Would you pls suggest me a Photo Editing Laptop under $100.

The Zenbook’s 70% Adobe RGB is a serious weakness compared to the Dell’s 100% and the Macbook Pro’s 90%. MS Surfacebook has a great screen too and pen support, albeit at crazy prices. Then there are nice pen models from HP and Lenovo that have awesome performance but screens on the same level as the Zenbook.

How did I not now about the HP Zbook X2? It has a 4K screen with 100% Adobe RGB, pen support, fast processor and discrete graphics. It is expensive but comparable to MS Surfacebook and MacBook Pro while having advantages over both (Thunderbolt 3, SD slot, pen support.). Only nitpick is size, dual core processor (HP says quad core 8550 is an option but doesn’t sell that model yet) and graphics card which is one generation behind latest.

Absolutely amazing how many people ignored an explicit request to NOT recommend a Mac. *mind blown*

Because that request makes no sense whatsoever. You dont have to run MacOS on a Mac. You can run Windows and Linux. So his request :

ETA I am not going Mac, so no Macbook Pro suggestions please. :P

excludes exactly zero computers total. He's simply not forced to go Mac with a Macbook Pro.

If you are a good pilot, it doesn't matter what plane you fly. If you are a good photo editor, it won't matter what computer you choose. The computer won't determine whether or not you suck or are a super star; you will decide that. Pick the one you like and be a superstar!! ;-)

That all depends on where you want to go and what you want to do and how fast - same goes for photo editing.

Back to your request....I don't know what your feeling is on a custom built laptop but may I suggest you just have a look at Puget Systems. The custom build to your needs and are priced fair and their customer service/tech support is the best!
I have 2 desktops specifically to handle photography.
Good luck Lisa!
