Congratulations to rparchen for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 12 votes - View Previous Winners

I caught some great conditions while in this area a month or so back. I came across this tree (as many do, it's not exactly uncommon) and made a specific point to return during a new moon. The clear skies in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest are just unreal and is near the top of my favorite night photography locations. Shot with Sony A7r and Zeiss 21mm ZE. Enjoy!!

Awesome Rick. Your light painting technique is very good from the few photos you shared. Very natural looking and your processing is great!

I've only visited the area once but I didn't plan very well (it was a side trip). I definitely need to visit again with more planning :P

Hey Rick,

The light painting is great, and I like the feel of the shot, but it must be the WA distortion that is making the tree feel to me like it is falling backwards. Maybe it's just me, but it sure feels that way. Other than that, I love the shot.

Utterly amazing. I've been studying a lot of these kinds of shots lately as a prelude to trying some myself on an imminent trip, and this is easily amongst the most stunning I have ever seen. So clean, sharp, well lit, and wonderfully exposed. Incredible! Extremely well done.

Jim, it is definitely the WA distortion as this had to be shot from a low angle. I tried playing around with some of the perspective control in CS6 but nothing looked "right" to me so I left it as-is. But I am convinced that a tilt-shift lens may help so I'm picking up a 24mm TS-E today. Looking forward to shoot more night stuff next weekend!

Amazing photo! Did you need a permit to shoot at night?

Hey Rick,

On shots like these, the perspective controls usually don't work well with the WA distortion as you loose too much of the shot. What I will usually do is use the Warp tool. That way you can just squeeze inwards the bottom of the tree itself, leaving the edges intact. Play with that, I think you will like the way you can eliminate thst WA look.

Amazing shot, one of the best MW images I've seen. Light painting has a real natural feel to it. Superb!

Absolutely wonderful. Jim may have a point, but for me, I'm falling backwards looking at it; stunned by its beauty. : )
