Good Day!

I recently reported to my new job here in Alaska and am transitioning from portraiture (attempts at portraiture) to landscape photography. I really want the landscapes to pop and be very sharp like I've seen you guys share here. So please give me some honest feedback on how I can improve.

Thanks for looking!

I prefer #1 in both background and the size of hikers giving perspective - gives a more open space feeling. I think you need some stormy or red skies. I know you will not have to wait long for the former at Dutch harbor!

That looks like it will be a fun move.

My first suggestion will be to lose the people... while once in a great while landscape shots include people, for the most part the focus of the shot is the land and adding people to it will distract. Though your #2 shot does look nice.

The best advice... since you have been looking at the shots here, is to just emulate then what you see. How are the compositions set up? What are the typical weather conditions like? What time of day are most of the best shots taken at?

When I learned photography at an early age, that's what I did. And as I shared in another recent thread getting nice shots that pop and all boils down 4 things.

Good Technique
Good Composition
Good Lighting
Good Processing

Work on those 4 aspects and in a few years you will have some great shots that will pop (if that is your gifting).

So first things first, the best way to learn is to shoot and then post. Learn from the comments and make adjustments the next time you shoot. Use Google, look at photos others have taken from the area you are now located in, and go about emulating them. In the early stages of learning, copying or trying to copy someone elses work is a great way to learn.

I want to see some shots on that lake at sunrise/sunset with some great sky!
Bet you can find some dark skies - milky way landscapes?
