p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Crosby Manitou Cascades

I took a weekend backpacking trip with some friends into Crosby Manitou state park in Northern MN. This park is unique compared to others in Minnesota in that it is a single use park - hiking only with 16 remote backpacking campsites.

The most well known feature of this park are a set of falls known as "The Cascades" found near the North end of the park.

Another point of interest I found after a little exploration was an un-named set of falls off the beaten path. You could only reach these by taking an un-marked spur trail to a steep, rocky (dangerous) decent into the Manitou River valley. My tripod couldnt make it down this chute so I had to bump the ISO to get the depth of field I wanted, but I still like the end result:

If I've managed to hold any of your attention this far, here is a shot of our campsite (three tents behind me) showing the place we spent a couple rain soaked nights cooking, talking, drinking and generally carrying on:

Thanks for looking!

My Favorite here is #2. The spotted lighting doesn't help the shots, but in #2 the composition is better. #1 should have the sky cropped off and you lost a lot of detail in the water that is blown out. If any of that can be recovered it would help it. But #2 is still a more solid composition.

It looks like a cool place to visit. If there was a way to shoot those locations early or late so that there was no sun in the shot, or perhaps when it was raining, that would have been a great time to get out and shoot the water. Overcast, even lighting is the best for waterfalls and cascades.

#1 has same side effect of poor cloning/stamping right of the base of the tree.

Too bad the tripod couldn't make it. Some better light and longer shutters speeds these falls would yield so many photo possibilities.

I went on vacation shortly after posting these, sorry for the slow response.

Jim -

I actually thought the spotted lighting added something to #2 but I agree on #1 it's not very flattering. Good call on the sky in #1, too.

As for the blown highlights, I think some detail must have been lost in upload to the web - the version on my machine still has blown highlights but only very few and in smaller areas near the top of the falls.

A re-shoot at a better time is certainly possible, these are only about 90 minutes away. For a backpacking trip like this I just use the cards I'm dealt since photography is not the primary goal for a trip and other non-photographers are with.

Scott -

Busted on the cloning - mustve been late when I was editing these. As you say, maybe I'll find my way back there without other non-photographers in tow so I can get some better lighting and timing. Unfortunately, the tripod can't make it to #2 under any circumstance.

Thanks to both of you!
