July and August mean wheat harvest in northeastern Oregon, and on into southeastern Washington (and eventually the prairie provinces of western Canada). Compared to the famous (and flat) Kansas wheat fields, those in the Northwest are truly scenic, with natural breaks in the landscape and surprises for a photographer.
Because of humidity on either end of a day, farmers here don't begin cutting at first light, nor stay on their fields as the sun sets ("But the light's wonderful. Don't stop now!") Over several summers I came to appreciate the farmer's life, and methods. And, too, the hot days, with cool mornings and skies filled with dust and moisture by day's end, nature's own diffusion filter.
Sorting through Fujichromes this morning, I scanned this photo in Silverfast, processed further in PhotoNinja/Nik Viveza/CS5, until I felt the mood I enjoyed that evening, twenty years ago.
