p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Spirit falls with people

I finally made it down to spirit falls on the little white salmon last Saturday. After a little trouble finding the trail head I made it safe and sound. Conditions were terrible for photography with bright light and deep shadows but I was lucky enough to time my visit with a large group of crazy but very nice people who were tossing their bodies off of the waterfall. Anyone who has been there in the spring can attest to the power in the falls. It was a breathtaking sight. I was scared just walking along the edge of the river. I would love to go back when the light is good and repeat these same shots. I was there to take landscape photos but if Jim feels these are too sports like he can certainly move the post.

Thanks for looking and C and C welcome.
Brian

Wow. Adding people is interesting. They are all good action/landscapes, but I like the first best.

Love the scale. Especially that second drop. It doesn't look that big in person. Is that a tiny kayaker? Hehe.

Hey Brian,

Interesting shots here. #2 is the best I think, though #1 is pretty cool, would love it if the kayak was at the top just tipping over...

But it's funny, simply adding the kayaker, a rather small element in each shot, for my eyes turns these shots immediately into sports shots and not Landscape shots. For me, it's all about the focus, and with the kayakers added, the focus is immediately and constantly on the kayaker. Anyone else think that?

I'll kindly disagree , Jim. The OP didn't go looking for people, they simply appeared in the landscape. It would be similar, I suppose, to having a shot set up in the Midwest (I'm certain you can think of other situations) looking across a flat landscape as the sun set and suddenly, a horse...or bicyclist...or, you name it...enters the frame. Click! Human scale! But still a landscape. Or...folks out hiking the dunes at DV or White Sands. My .02

To the OP—did you connect with the people? Betting they'd pay for prints, you caught the action very well.

Majeed- Apparently the second drop is in someways as bad as the first. The water moves sideways and has a propensity to trap people. I think that is why the kayaker looks like he is heading such a weird direction

Jim I totally know what you are saying. Especially the color shots where the bright colors really draw your attention. The first one I feel is closer to a true landscape because it contains more of the surroundings and the kayaker is not front and center.

Blueshadows. I did get one of the kayakers email and sent him a link. It was his first time down the falls and he was pretty psyched to see the shots. Hopefully he will send it out to everyone else. Although I will say almost everyone had a camera of some sort. Most of them had go-pro brackets on their helmets and there were people on all sides of the falls getting pictures.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Brian

Hey Brian,

Yeah, it would be pretty wild to see this in person. How many kayakers are doing this? Is it a weekend thing?

Jim- I think I was pretty lucky in my timing. There was two pretty large groups who went over right after another so I got to see probably 8 or so go over. There were probably another 8 or so who portaged. Its hard to know exactly because they were all wandering up and down the trail to see from different angles.
I asked the guy whose email I had how to best hook up again and see more kayakers go over. He said it is pretty random. He said weekends were the busiest but that also there were groups of locals who sometimes went after work during the week. He suggested I check at the fish hatchery at the bottom to see if there are cars parked there. Also the season ends in another two or three weeks when the water gets too low and nobody runs it then. I guess sometimes even if you get lucky and end up when there are kayakers there they often will look at the flow and decide not to go.
I don't know if you have been there yet but it is a little bit tricky to find the trail and the trail itself is definitely a scramble and not for the faint of heart or weak of knee If anyone wants specific info they can PM me. You can also find some directions on the internet. If anyone ever wants a guide I would be happy to go back with another photographer. Just PM me

I would love to see the first one in color, I feel the black and white detracts from all the action that is happening. Also the brightness/contrast seems a bit overpowering in the first. Where the water is feeding to it seems to be blown out. All in all this is a spectacular set and I wish I was there with you catching the action while snapping away. Thanks for sharing.

Love your pictures. If you have first one in color, try to submit for the National Park contest to be on the pass, they love this sort of action pictures!
