Although the location is both iconic and over-photographed (if that is possible), it's still spectacular, and a great opportunity for neophytes like yours truly to gain landscape experience. Same day (May 28); different perspectives/focal lengths obviously.

Comments/criticisms/advice all appreciated.

Greg

Edit: added two updates based on suggestions. Pano (sort-of) crop for #1; new processing for #2 so as to bring up contrast a bit more in the mountains and trees, and de-emphasize the broad halos around the trees (a consequence of inexpert exposure blending). Also warmed it up a touch.

wow, #1 rocks. The sky is amazing but maybe try a tiny pano crop for balance?
#2 I am viewing on my uncalibrated (aka work) monitor. maybe increase the contrast of the trees and mountain a tad?
lovely shots, thanks!

Hey Greg,

Places are only over shot in one's own mind. Don't let someone elses declaration of a location (iconic or not) being over shot as a detriment to your going and enjoying it and shooting it like many before you.

Your #1 is the best here. You sure got some cool clouds there to light up. With #2 it would be nice but as David mentions you have a whole area of the shot that is lacking in contrast. Just look at the difference between the trees and Mt Moran in #1, and then what they look like in #2. Your trees and mountains in #2 should look nice and crisp just like you got in #1. How did you process these? With layer masks or some automated process?

Jim

that's wonderfully put, and good for all of us to remember. Last spring I researched 'overly shot' Mesa arch and had a wonderful experience, my experience. And here on FM I was happily received by those that have already been there and seen many other photos of it from every direction but upside down.

Thanks so much, David and Jim, for your opinions and advice. In response to Jim's question...#1 is a 2 portrait frame stitch with tonality adjusted with layer masks; #2 is a merge of two exposures (same landscape frame) 5 stops apart, blending (via layer masks) the trees from the "high-key" exposure with everything else (water, mountains, sky) from the low key exposure, followed by more tonality tweaking with masks.

I will have another go at pp for #2; in hindsight, I guess one obvious choice to consider would be to skip the bracketing and just silhouette the trees for a more typical sunset image.

Excellent set Greg. The first has some great sky action going on, which really adds to the appeal.

I really like the clouds and the reflection in #1. Although #2 is very good as well.

Even if the location is popular, it is always interesting to see different interpretations. Even yours are considerably different. I think I prefer the high contrast of the first image. But I also like the softer more tranquil feeling of the second image.

Nice set. There is nothing wrong with good images of iconic locations.

I agree, #1 is better, and really different than I remember seeing it. I guess you were able to get down to the water level? My sunrise was less impressive, so I didnt bother venturing down.

Great light! Very cool shots!!! Love the sky in the first and would not crop it.

My only critique would be to try to reduce the HDR'ish haloing in the mountains on the second.

Thanks, Jim! I was going for tranquil with #2 but the implementation was not great (I tried again).

Thanks, Bruce! Yup; #1 is from the water level, #2 is from climbing up the hill on the far side of the road. I remember seeing a comment from Matt Anderson (whose images of Oxbow Bend and other Northwest locations are amazing), saying he climbed on top of an RV there to get a different perspective!)

Thanks so much, Mark; that means a lot. I tried a crop anyhow just to see what it would look like, and added it as an edit, along with a reprocessing of #2.
