If you can tolerate a road in a landscape, I think this is the best scenic area in Capitol Reef.

Hey Jim,

I am just on my iPhone as I am at the airport, but from what I see this looks like a very nice shot. Good lighting and a good composition. Good work.

As for tolerating roads in landscape shots, I have sure never heard anyone complain. A well done road shot is among the best landscape shots there are.

Thanks. I did almost no processing on this except sharpening and resizing.

You can always clone out the road, road or no road well done.

Lovely shot! I am normally not a great fan of man-made objects in true landscape photos, but I think it adds something here. It functions as a great lead in and think the image would be weaker without it. I do think that the shadows could be a little darker, as I find that there is a slight lack of overall contrast. However, this is personal preference.

Very cool - road and all. In fact, I think the road helps make the image.

I would say the road is actually essential for the success of this composition.
Great job!

I agree, the winding road helps the composition

Very nice, Jim. I'm fine with the road. I'm sure you could spend a semester's course talking about the geology shown in this one shot. Looks like a beautiful place. As much as I enjoy looking at the shot, to be there and experience it in person must have been even better!

I agree that the road is a plus here and in many other landscape compositions. Well done, Jim.

Composition is good, the classic Capitol Reef road shot.

Seems a little early in the day for me as I know the area well and you can get real nice long shadows there. I was looking at your exif and time shot, is your camera in mountain time for Utah or central time for New York?

To be the further pedantic nitpicker, why ISO 400? No tripod? Sky seems blown to me, no filter?

And when you say "no processing on this except sharpening and resizing" are you saying you shot a jpeg, so it applied your in-camera settings, or it was raw and you just went with it? If so, what do you feel are the advantages of not doing any processing since a raw file is, by it's nature, just a raw file that should be processed appropriately for the subject matter.

Have you been in the visitors center and bought some of the books for ideas?

Just to clarify. Settings were iso400, f/10, 1/250. Higher iso and speed were selected to minimize camera shake due to windy conditions. I do not use the camera' s clock. Image was taken about an hour before sunset. I was in location several hours and I liked the combination of light and clouds. This was a raw file with pretty simple processing.
This is a popular location. I would like to see others post their favorite versions

Hey Jim,

I do find it really odd that you do not use the Camera's clock. It's an excellent resource later on when you are planning trips and going back over your shots to know when it was you took a shot. So that is a bit bewildering to hear that you don't use it.

It had sounded like you had made some changes to how you went about your Landscape photography from 2 years ago. Myself, one of the things I had hoped that you would have changed the most was your lack of desire to use a tripod. I hope that you are now using one. I can't think of any of the top Landscape Photographers that don't use tripods 99% of the time they shoot. There is a reason for their success, and a part of that is using a tripod. So I am hoping that using a tripod is a change to your practice that you are now incorporating.

I am using a tripod on a regular basis. Even with a tripod I like to keep the shutter speed high when it is windy.

Awesome! And that's a smart move to be aware of the wind and to shoot faster because of it. I am glad to hear that.
