First time posting here, after perhaps a decade of lurking. You guys are amazing and have thought me a lot.
Some photographs I have taken on a recent trip to Lewis and Harris, the largest island in the Scottish Outer Hebrides.

Wonderful shots all of them. I've been wanting to go there ever since I ran out of time back on a college trip and missed it. Time is ticking.....

Thanks very much David. I can highly recommend visiting, as it is highly scenic!

We have a cottage booked on Harris for a week in late July. How were the midges? We've been to Scotland before and fully appreciate their wrath. Hopefully the sea breezes will minimize their impact on the coast but I'm sure we will have our hands full inland. Any thoughts or suggestions would be highly welcomed. Have you seen Ian Lawson's book on the area?

Lovely shots BTW. I'm bringing a 10 stop UV filter. Is that what you used?

Thanks very much Richard, I'm sure you'll love the island. We were there at the end of April, just before midge season had started. Midge season should be in full swing now, but I find that their intensity is unpredictable. The worst midges attacks I ever experienced was while camping right next to the coast (loch Etive and on the Isle of Skye). Except for wearing a midge suit, I find that there is not much one can do but just accept the midge torture..

In the posted shots I may have used both a 10 and 6 stops ND filter, either on their own or stacked.

I didn't know Ian Lawson, so thanks for recommending him. He's got an amazing collection of photographs.

Agree on Glen Etive. We had our battles with them there as well. We will be armed with Skin So Soft, midge hats and will have our clothes tucked in. I'm told they don't like garlic, so may take a few garlic pills. Finally, it also seems the don't like yeast so I MUST resort to having a few pints of Guinness each night to ward them off. Sad the sacrifices we must make to get photos.

Enjoy your time on Harris, I'm sure it will be ace! In a way we should be happy with the midges, as if it wasn't for them, Scotland would be suffering from mass tourism soon!

Thanks very much Stan. This is roughly half of the keepers from the trip. I was very lucky with the weather conditions!

I like the composition of #3 the most. It feels quite balanced and well thought out.

How long are the exposures in the first 3 shots? One of my favourite photogs has a lot of coastal images like these with similar texture in the water.

Thanks very much Justin. I blended up to three exposures to balance the sky and foreground for the first three shots. The longest exposures used for those were 244s, 150s and 30s respectively.

Thanks Pokertony and Scott. I tend to believe those are my least worst out of this series as well (though this was not confirmed on 500px...
