p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Slot Canyon Waterfall

After Disney Land with the family I was in need of some good solitude and quiet, so I headed down to Southern Utah by myself for a day.

A flash flood had gone through about a week earlier and wiped out a good chunk of the trees in this canyon, there was debris everywhere, and the one shot I really wanted to get was no longer an option since the cottonwood trees were now a pile of rubble down the river. Still I had this falls to myself for over an hour and I just sat there and enjoyed the sound of the water rushing through the canyon, and soaked up the peaceful scene.

Very nice shot and looks very peaceful compared to Disneyland.

Were you sitting in the stream? Dave

There was a large rock directly behind me that I was sitting on.

I like the choice to go super tall with this image. I need to try some of these. The colour and light both look great. The biggest issue for me is the cluttered foreground. The rocks seem a bit random in their placement, and I would like more lead in lines to bring my eyes up to the good stuff. Perhaps doing some subtle dodgeing/burning in areas of the foreground, and bringing out those water streaks could help with that.

Thanks for the comment Justin, you always give great feedback. This is my first vertical pano, it's a format I have been wanting to try for a while, it's definitely challenging trying to find stuff that works with it though. I agree about the rocks, I'll see what I can do. I was rather limited in my composition because if I moved even 2 inches to the right I started to get bright directly lit areas of sandstone in my shot.

IMO, it's so hard to find subjects suitable for a vertical pano, but you've found a good one here. Like Justin, I prefer leading lines if I can find them, but that seems like it would be nearly impossible with this format. I believe his dodging/burning suggestion will really help draw the eye where you want it to go. I really like this image. My only suggestion would be that the orange on the back wall is just a bit too saturated, something I'm often guilty of. I might dial it back just a little because the remainder of the scene is processed extremely well. BTW, is the Kanarra Creek?

Hey Andy,

Pretty cool shot here. I am not sure what shot you really wanted, but this one is sure good in my book.

Thanks guys. Yes this is Kanarra Creek. The iconic ladder in front of this falls was washed away by the flash flood.

Where is Kanarra Creek? I'm heading up that way in early July and want to shoot some of the slots.

It's just south of Cedar City. North of Zion.

Oh, yeah..... Very nice. And a great subject for a vertical pano. FWIW, I like the foreground rocks...
