p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Changes to the Presentation boards

Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that this past weekend I was testing out some new features for our presentation boards. You may have notice that these new components have now been implemented:
  1. 1) One new thread per day. This code will prevent members from posting more than one new thread in a 24-hour period.

  2. 2) The five bump limit: The original poster (OP) can only bump his/her own thread to the top of the page for a maximum of five (5) times by replying to it. Any further reply by the OP will not bump it to the top. However replies from other FM members will always bump the thread to the top without restrictions.
Note: In addition, the thread will not bump if the OP makes a consecutive reply. In other words, replying to yourself will not bump the post.

This was carefully thought-out. We've developed these features to give all FM members fair visibility on our presentation board's first page. Too many members were abusing their "bumping" privileges with excessive replies. This new limitation will help level the playing field.

The “Landscape rules and guidelines” have been updated to reflect these changes:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/landscape.htm

This thread applies to all of our presentation boards.

Update: I will be working on a new multi-quote feature where one reply will be able to quote several posts at once.

All the best,
Fred

Fred,
Could you please clarify: is the limit five comments from OP per thread total, or after someone's reply? I assume it's the latter.
I am OK with the change, and I think its for the better, but do not see it's working as intended. After seeing Kee's complaint, I decided to experiment with my thread, and posted reply to mine, this one:

Gorgeous, simply gorgeous!

Shiva, thank you for the kind words.

Sasha.

That was the first reply after someone else comment, and it did not bump. Then I posted few more, just to see how it works- no, did not bump. I am still under 5 reply limit, though.
So maybe either more explanation or more testing is needed.

Thank you,

Sasha.

Sasha,
You may reply to your thread as many times as you wish but the thread will only get bumped to the top of the page during your first 5 replies or if another FM member replies to it.

The post you quoted didn't bump the thread to the top because it was your 13th reply to your thread (The max is 5).

Also you replied to your thread while being the last poster. That would not bump the thread even if you were still within your 5 initial replies. Here is a quote from the rules above regarding consecutive posts:
"Note: In addition, the thread will not bump if the OP makes a consecutive reply. In other words, replying to yourself will not bump the post."

Fred - I just noticed this change with one of my posts in the critique board. I'm okay with the fact that my own bump to my own thread does not get the thread pushed to the top unless someone else replies. However, the "Time Ago" column doesn't show properly and I think it should. I made a post two minutes ago, and when I went back to the Critique board list it still showed "12 hours ago." It wasn't clear to me that there was a new post at all.

Sounds like a good feature! Thanks Fred! I appreciate that you continue to support the forum through these updates, articles, and your presence in the message board! Definitely my favorite photo community on the web. Ya done good.

Fred,
I also would like to know more detailed information about the changes you made this past weekend.

Well.. First thing first. After your comment on my last thread, https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1295210 , I cannot even comment there anything. There is no way to reply. That is why I am using this thread to mention the additional problem I have. I re-started my computer to remedy any bug, but no! the same thing. Did you adjust my thread?

Second - when did this new changes start applying? I was affected even long before this past weekend.

Thanks Fred.

Kee

That is a good point. Although the "Time" is accurate on your post, it does not show the correct "Time Ago" on the boards page when a post is not bumped.
I will work on a solution for this.
Thanks,
Fred

Fred, thanks for looking into that.
One other question - how will this affect 'thread resurrection?' Sometimes there is a valid reason to bring back a thread from a long time ago - Updated reply, or additional photo to add to a series or whatever. Maybe that applies more to the Critique board than the formal presentation boards? Does this change mean that 'thread resurrection' is no longer possible, if bumps by the original poster are no longer allowed?

Initially, the change was made to all presentation boards. However, The Critique board and perhaps others will be excluded from this rule.

You brought another good point about "'thread resurrection". I need to look into archived thread as well.
Any thread can be bumped to the top at anytime by any member including the OP. However it can't be bumped by the OP if his/her 5 replies have already been used.

Update: The critique board is not a presentation board and therefore was not affected by the latest change.

I try not to bump my threads, but I also feel an obligation to reply. Some copy and paste all the comments into one and reply individually but in one reply. But I can't keep track of the quote thingies and just make a mess of it.

I have started using like to let the poster know I have seen his/her reply. Maybe a thanks button would be good.

There have also been times when I would like to have a don't like button

I too use the like button to politely let a poster know I appreciate their comment. That way I am not pushing my threads to the top. I do answer questions, and if I do reply try to do so right away, while the thread is already near the top.

I like these changes, and I agree with Ben's comment. When I do reply individually to threads that I've started, I've always tried to do it quickly so that I only "bump" my post once even if it's with several separate comments. I've started "liking" every comment on my thread as a way of acknowledging them...although I will admit that it's sometimes tough to "like" something that has just lambasted my images! lol Perhaps you can add a "Well my photographs are awesome and you are blind and stupid...but I still acknowledge your comment" button. Just a thought...

I like the changes.

I think this forum really needs a "multi quote" button now that these changes have been implemented. That way you don't need to post 20 times to reply to the people nice enough to leave comments on your image. I have found a way around this problem and reply to separate people in a single post, but it is a massive PITA.

The multi quote is a nice concept. The problem would be how to make it intuitive and easy to use.
I'm all ears!!

Fred,
I am not trying to be a pest, but I honestly do not understand the algorithm.
So I'll formalize it:

IF
(#of times OP replied in a thread <=5)
OR
(OP replied after (not OP) commented)
THEN
Update time
Bump thread to the top
ELSE
Update time
ENDIF

Is that what you had in mind?

Thanks,
Sasha.

On other forums I frequent, you just click a small " button below the comments you wish to multiquote, then hit reply after they have all been selected. When the reply box is opened, all of the separate quotes will show in the box with space between for you to add a comment under each one. Here is an example of what it looks like when I do it by hand. 7th post down.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1285711/1

I just go back and forth, hitting "quote", copying the text in the reply box, going back, hitting "quote" on another person's reply, and then pasting the copied quote above the new one. Rinse and repeat for however many people I need to reply to. If not I would probably have 2000 posts by now.

I think vBulletin uses what Justin is talking about. PhpBB 3.x has started implementing multi quote feature. Fred are you using a custom code or modifying PhpBB? If you're already using one of the mainstream board frameworks, you might be able to test out the multi quote features on a beta site. If you're custom coding, you could use them for a base and see which one works better for your site.

This is a custom forum and not part of any commercial forum. I will look into Justin's description.
I was thinking on adding a "check-box" for the posts to be included in the multi-quote.
That would be easier to select and un-select them.
