p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zebra, Zebra!

Zebra slot is in the Escalante Grand staircase. This is an extremely popular hike with several dozens making the journey each day. The slot is very short but beautiful. Its notable in how narrow it is. The first narrow section one has to walk like an Egyptian hieroglyphic; shoulders, hips and feet all moving sideways in the direction of the slot. I held my tripod in one hand and my camera bag on my head, as it was far too thick to carry at a lower height. The next section is much narrower than the soles of your boots, so you can't really walk through, your shoes will get stuck. Facing up the canyon I pushed my hands outward and downward to shinny upwards in the V of the canyon, then jammed my knees into the standstone. Repeated this move several times until I could put my feet on one wall of the canyon and my butt on the other. This will steady you about 5-8 feet off of the canyon floor, and I was still wearing my camera pack. Schooch your butt/feet sideways up the canyon to get by this short section and descend with the reverse move. Any climbers out there could let me know the name of this move I would appreciate it as I couldn't find a picture or description that fit.

The cool part of the slot is only about 30 ft in length. The small black circles are Moqui balls which have been broken open and fallen off.

After this is the "keeper hole". If you go into it you may not be able to get out without some help!

It's called "chimneying", as you might use it to climb a chimney. Wikipedia has a full glossary of climbing terms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimney_%28climbing%29

"Stemming" can also be used to cross an area where it is too narrow to walk on the ground.

Nice shot, BTW.

Thanks Stan. Those climbing terms are more general, but certainly inclusive, so they will work. I've also heard the term benching before, but never saw it in a website, so maybe its made up.
