I finally made it to the Painted Hills, one of the true wonders of Oregon. Heck, it only took me 20 years to get over to this magical place. We hit it just right with the flowers in bloom and thanks to good winter and early spring rains, there was green to go with the otherworldly hues of the Hills, created by deposits of iron oxides, manganese and magnesium. There are limitless images to capture, whether "big pictures" or more intimate personal ones, and here are a few. Comments and suggestions for improvement always welcome!

Mike, these are really nice! I especially like the range of colors in the first image. That images makes me want to go back there in the spring!

Lovely shots! The colours certainly seem otherworldly.

These are terrific, Mike, all the more so because of the different scales/perspectives presented. (I love how the last two complement the more traditional landscapes).

I wonder what #1 and #2 would look like with more of a pano crop (either removing some vertical OR adding some horizontal). Also, #2 "seems" like it needs a degree or two of CCW rotation even though I suspect you were perfectly level.

Now you have to go to the Cabin Lake Blinds!

Very nice, varied set. I like them. What is the flower in #4?

Hey Mike,

#3 is my favorite here. I would like #2, but I think the ground layer should be a bit brighter. #1 really doesn't work at all for me with the sunlit area unfortunately being in the upper left corner and it just creates an unbalanced shot with the eye getting pulled out of the shot.

Beautiful series Mike. Excellent details in the macro. The last image is really interesting.

I think #1 lives up to its name here. You know it's a special place if you don't even need to include the sky to make an amazing landscape photo. I enjoyed seeing them all, you stepped outside the box a little here and it works.

Jim

You are so picky!! Actually you are correct and I was planning on working on that upper right area to bring down the brightness using Nik Viveza 2 and got side tracked. Thanks for the reminder on #1!!

best

thanks much Greg

I was pretty careful about being level and the level guide in the viewfinder of the E-M1 really helps but sometimes the landscapes play tricks on the eye!!

I did take one 8 frame pano shot that looks funny in a small format.

Hey Mike,

Your update is better, but... You know there has to always be a but...

Here is my suggestion.... well first, there may be no easy fix though... But what I would try is to lower the exposure in that area more... the brightest areas the most... then I would decrease the contrast... Since it was already brighter, just lowering the exposure will actually increase the contrast since the dark areas will get darker. Perhaps even lower the saturation... The eye... will naturally go to the brightest and/or most vivid area in a scene. Unfortunately, it's the upper left corner, where you don't want the eyes of the viewer going to

Keep at it... I know I will like it one day!

Hey Mike,

You are a man on a mission! I think you nailed the upper left, that looks super cool. But it looks like you brightened up the lower right area in turn? I know you said this was the last edit... so I will make this my last suggestion... (I bet you hope that my last suggestion was about 4 suggestions ago... ) But I would make the lower right the same brightness it was in the previous versions, but I would slightly brighten that cool hill that sits between the upper left and lower right corners if I brightened any area...
