p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Misty Metlako

I hooked up with Mark Metternich during my trip to Oregon because I wanted him to take me to some favorite places, and give me some photoshop lessons. I also don't like to explore unfamiliar areas by myself as I believe in the buddy system for hiking. As it turned out, there were many clear sky days (instead of the overcast ones I was hoping for), so we spent a lot of helpful time working on photoshop techniques during the mid day hours.

Metlako was one of the first places he took me and I took this images with my tripod against "the overhang tree" (you know the one if you have been there). It made me a little nervous, but the result was worth it. This shot was taken with the Leica 100mm f2.8 Apo on my 1Ds III.

Enjoy and comments welcome

Revised version per Greggs' suggestions for comparison

I like colors and saturation and people tend to tell me that I add too much of it to my shots, but Dave there's way too much yellow saturation here, even for my taste. The greens aren't green anymore but more yellows and very, very bright. If you just pull down yellows and adjust brightness on greens you have a nice shot.
Also, water flow is very white, it lost structure/details so I would pull it down a notch too, or just burn that area a bit.
To burn In PS "properly", copy your image's layer and select the blend mode to Luminosity.

Hey Dave,

This is a cool shot, and it's always great when we get to learn new tricks and methods, especially when it comes to Photoshop.

Let me say that my immediate response is that I do like this shot. But I will say that Greg brings up a few good points for some minor touch up's on this. I know my shots from that area are probably having the greens being as vibrant as yours, because emotionally it does seem to feel that green. But... turning down the green (or yellow) just a smidge might be interesting to see...

Dave,

Wonderful capture of the beautiful falls in the area. I hope I am able to make a trip there shortly.

I am not sure the yellowish saturation on green leaves in your photo was actually there or not. However, I do believe that when it comes springs in the southeast, newly grown leaves do emit yellowish fresh green color especially when it is overcast or rainy. I just make this kind of observations very carefully recently when we have been preparing waterfall photography.

I think the revision is the better shot. It is too easy to overdo the greens in the Gorge.

The second shot is great Dave. I like it better. It seems more "natural". Great work.

Thanks Gregg. I like the second version better too. Input is one of the values of a forum like this. I will probably go back and revisit my PunchBowl Pano and Proxy images with regards to yellow saturation.

Hi Dave.

It was really great getting to know you and hangin' out in the Gorge!

Lovely shots here.

I think that when colors are brighter they come off as slightly more saturated too. I think if these were mellowed in brightness/contrast a hair and then saturation taken down maybe -5 pts in Layer/Color mode, that might be the little touch they need. Great shots nonetheless!

I hope all is going well for you.

I am still coveting your Leica collection! I'm sold on those now!

Dave, if you don't mind my asking, around what date was that photo taken?

Thanks for the input Mark. I am doing well. I took a 3 week trip to New England with my wife in the fall of 2013 and I show a few images from that trip soon. I now know you were going through tough times when we were together and hope everything is good now.

For Ravens Fall-- the shot was taken June 25, 2013

Looking forward to your NE shots -- I used to live there as a kid (before I got seriously into photography) and wish I had images from the autumns there.
