Shot in fairly low light. C&c welcome. Particularly on how to get the eyes to be sharper. I used live view and manual focusing to focus on the eyes but I fear she might have moved (she was standing) slightly causing her eyes to move out of the plane of focus.

Actually, I'm pretty amazed you got it that sharp at 1/20 sec. Why not kick the ISO up to 1200 and recoup some speed on your shutter?

Coming from the NEX bodies, I am still scared to boost the ISO that high but I keep forgetting the D800 doesn't get noisy for a while. Irrational fear perhaps. Next time I certainly will push the ISO higher.

yeah been there done that. For the longest time I didn't want to shoot above 400. Hello, technology! Also good job. At 3.2 I wouldn't worry too much about critical focus, 3.2 is pretty deep.

Well then the question remains, how do I get it sharper?

Another recent post would be an example of what I am chasing - https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1285661

The nikkor 85/1.8 is supposed to be fairly sharp so is the difference just the amount/kind of light? I have seen some images in low light with especially sharp eyes - almost a glassy feel to them. That is what I am trying to reproduce.

You are not alone in this. I find a lot of folks didn't revise their thinking when the ISOs got better. I tried to stay ahead of it. For a while I was using ISO 400 as my default setting on my previous camera - Canon 20D. I was shooting lots of birds then and usually needed more shutter speed.

I think the sharpness you are looking for will only come with more light. I love the high ISO performance of my 1DX but if there isn't much light I am always disappointed with my sharpness.
Nice shot and lovely woman.

I agree with Greg. More light and a faster shutter speed. At 1/20, it takes very little movement to create a motion blur.
