p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Day at Pine Island Rookery

This rookery , Pine Island , is on private property. Once a year they allow folks to visit as part of the bird festival.

If you only like clean smooth backgrounds, this is not the set for you So very hard to isolate anything amongst all those branches, moss and twigs . Not to mention that the trees were pretty far away in the water.

Having never seen a rookery before, I was like a kid in a candy store. So much activity, so many cute little ones. It was amazing to watch the pairs share the parenting duties.

So, here is my take on a day at the rookery.

I do hope you enjoy. As always your nits, crits and suggestions are much appreciated.

And it all starts with the eggs and nest --

1. Tending to the eggs . Notice the blue eggs

2. Lots of time spent on the nest

3. Nests all over

4. Buliding material for the nest

5. Then the little ones . Fluff balls of white feathers.

Then the little one require a lot of attention .

6. Grooming

7.Feeding - Frogs legs guys

8. Dad coming in to take his turn at the care

9. Dads home !

10. Listen up little one, there is danger in life

Parents are watchful over the little ones.

Then as the sun starts to set behind the cypress tress, all start to settle in for the evening.

I hope you enjoyed the visit to the rookery.

Birdie

11. Danger - It lurks below the nests

12. Got to keep the little ones warm and safe

13.Everyone heads in for the night as the last rays of light fade behind the trees.

What a treat, Roberta! No. 4 is spectacular - harrowing in a nice setting. It speaks to parents doing anything for the kids.

Nice mini-documentary of life in your neck of the woods/swamp/island...many wonderful shots...I was expecting the snout of an alligator to be popping up as the herons looked down. I suspect you may make a return visit!

I enjoy seeing some habitat with wildlife, so these are great. I especially like seeing the fuzzy little ones. My favorites are #3, #4, #6, and #9.

Those are incredible! Nice that the nests are not too high and the chicks can be seen.

Lovely set Birdie!! Good behaviour shots. Those next sure seem skimpy. And I'm sure many young birds become croc snacks.
