p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Blacksmiths // Historic Camden, SC

Hello all,
I had an opportunity to attend a Blacksmith Artisan's Guild Workshop yesterday in Historic Camden, South Carolina (not too far from where I live in Sumter, SC). I was a spectator only, although they were extremely willing to hand me a hammer, a forge and some bar stock. While I was there taking up valuable space in that beautiful little town, I decided to break out my new (to me) Canon 1D3 and snap a few photos for them.

Being that a great friend and neighbor of mine is a member (and the leader of the workshop yesterday), I've decided to join the guild and learn the trade. He has offered me a sort of free apprenticeship at his forge here in Sumter and I hope to be joining them at their next workshop to ruin some perfectly good metal with a perfectly good hammer.

All of these were shot with the 1D3 and 35mm f/2 IS and processed in Lightroom. Please enjoy and, as always, comments and criticisms are always welcome. And, as my mother used to say, "If you don't have something nice to say..." (although she usually said whatever she wanted and got away with it).

Best,
Matthew

I like the 1st photo in particular. Since they've turned you into a blacksmith, will you turn them into photographers? ( I think SC is a hidden gem - so many nice small towns, espacially along the coast - and Charleston is awesome).

Thank you. I think they're far better blacksmiths than I am a photographer so the trade wouldn't be fair. Perhaps I'll just keep all my bad photo habits to myself.

I love SC. It's home. I'm from Charleston originally, but now live in Sumter, which is just a couple of hours away. At first, I missed the food and charm of Charleston, but have grown to love Sumter's small town feel.

Funny story: One of the pastors at my church was complaining one Friday afternoon and said, "I left here and went and picked up one daughter from one school, stopped at the laundry to pick up my suits, picked another daughter up from another school, dropped the first daughter off at soccer, stopped at the bank, and then dropped the second daughter off at the house and came back to the church and it took me almost 2 hours!"

I just laughed... When I lived in Charleston, I was lucky if I could get home from work in an hour and a half on a Friday afternoon (and I lived 11 miles from work).

1 and 2 for me, Mate.

Really neat stuff. I have to say, I think the Black and white treatment adds a bit of mystery and old' school feel. (Which is perfect for a trade such as blacksmithing.)

That sounds like a really neat deal. I would love to learn a bit about metalworking.

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to more!

Thank you _RW! I used to be quite active here and sort of fell away from photography. I'm looking forward to coming back. You guys run a tight ship and I definitely have my work cut out for me! Thank you for the feedback.

Best,
Matthew
