p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Under the pier

Ended up under the Dania Beach Pier yesterday with my camera gear and a reading light. Spent a few hours taking some long exposures and studying simultaneously. Must say it was the most fun I've had studying since I started med school.

Thoughts?

Great shots.

Can I ask which ND filter you were using?

The center piling ruins the image potential. I say potential because we don't even know what we should be seeing.

Don't really see a point to the two separate images either since they are essentially the same shot.

I really like the image, especially the 2nd. As far as posting two images...I see a big difference between the two. Upon looking at the first my comment was going to be to crop out the foreground weeds as they battle with the peer for my focus.

I love the exposure and the colours you captured.

Thank you chez

Ckcarr, the placement of the center column was intentional in that it hid the columns behind it perfectly leaving a bit to the viewers imagination. Others (on other boards) picked up on it and commended it whereas you disliked it (which is perfectly fine - I just wanted to offer an explanation for why the particular spot was chosen).

As to both images being essentially the same, you are correct as they are crops of the exact same image. I presented both as I couldn't make up my mind whether to keep the algae at the bottom of the frame or not. Thank you for the input -- I shall keep it in mind next time I'm in a similar spot.

I like your postings a lot, indeed. I am sure you spent sometime for this composition with the center post right there. That is very nice to me for expanding my imagination. You succeeded well. The color of the see.. wow! What struck me is that the photo is not symmetrical at all. And that is a plus as well. More interesting. I am very sure you will take care of patients in a very caring manner when I see your photos which have seriousness and you being very articulate.

Cheers!

Kee

The sky looks too pasted in. There is also a lot "halo" type edges where the sky was pasted in. Compositionally I agree with Craig, the center post isn't helping. It blocks the vanishing point and stops the viewer at the post and doesn't let you "enter" the scene and explore. I do like the colour of the water. I am think because of that center post a different view point would work better so you can see the "vanishing point" of the pier.

How about this for an alternate view? Unfortunately, since the pier has 3 legs supporting it instead of the usual 2, there was no way to capture the typical vanishing point as there would have been interference from the other half. Next weekend, I'll head to the spot again and see if I can frame it differently. I don't know how to swim so am rather scared of wading too far out into the water but I'll try different compositions sometime.

don't you hate it when you have a place that is cool but not perfect, this is one of those places. With the centre post you can't get that image you are after. The original seems over sharpened with that halo edge.

I think these are great. Anything to distract from studying is welcome. I wish I had gotten into this while I was in school. The center post makes it unique from other pier shots. I actually like the first crop more. The moss is a little distracting to me. Maybe just sand there would be nice. Don't let grad school steal this hobby from you. I lost most of mine in dental school and it took a long time to get them back.

Hey Anurag.

I will just have to echo everything that both Craig and Scott said concerning these. There is some very distinct haloing going on in #1 and 2 on every edge in there. I am guessing that when you made your selections for your layer mask and feathered the edges that the feathering amount was too much, maybe 5 or 10 pixels?

Also as to the centering of those first two shots. Here in Southern California at Huntington Beach we have a pier with the same 3 pier piling setup as the pier you shot. Myself, I always thought the shots looked off, the center piling was just too dominating in the scene. So I was never satisfied with my shots of it until one day, I set up the shot vertically, and simply only shot one side of it. And the shot balanced so well, and diminishing openings cascaded nicely in the distant also.

Jim, thanks for the suggestion. I shall certainly give that a go next time I head there. As for the processing, I just Lightroom 4 and Nik Software HDR Efex Pro 2 so didn't have as much control over the haloing effect around the pillars. I'll go back and play around with it again to see if I can get that transition to be smooth. Looking at the image at 100% I do see it was crunched up a little too much.

Hey Anurag,

If you didn't use any masking, than it would seem obvious that the HDR Efex did the damage. I would suggest processing this again without using that HDR program. It's very pronounced, one doesn't need to go into 100% to see it as it's clearly obvious from this web view.

I enjoyed the frames straight away, it was the near symmetry and hdr effect that caught my artistic eye. I didnt notice the techie stuff and just enjoyed them for what they are. thanks for shariing
