besides sending them to Canon and costing me a bit, looking for guidence. I take my MK3 with 70-200 to shoot and get error 99. I take same lens with MK2 and error code 99. Take MK2 and MK3 with 400 and error code 99. Swap out memory cards, pull batteries, exchange with extra battery, and get error code 99's. This does not happen all the time, just the times it has happen I have had the need to use whatever combination. Put every thing away, go about my business. Come home, try camera again, and no issues. Can take pictures with any body and lens combo and fill up CF or SD card. Frustrating as hell. The next time I go out to shoot, no issues. I can go out maybe 8-10 times and it happens 1 or 2 times, the error code 99. Any ideas? or Hints? thanks

1Ds II and 1Ds III? Have you tried replacing the lens?

Have you checked to be certain it isn't one battery that's doing it? A battery with a weak cell can give ERR99 with high current draw. A date-time battery needing replacement can do it too. Given the age of the cameras, if those are original batteries I'd consider that first.

Other things to consider are ambient temperature and the possibility of a bit of oil on the electrical contacts.

With it happening with two different lenses on two different cameras (if I read correctly) the more common things like mirror sticking or failing mirror motor would seem less likely.

Just had my 1DsIII in to Canon for an ERR 99 service. It has to do with the Mirror Charge Mechanism. Needed to be replaced. Works fine now.

Had a similar problem with 1DMKIII. Intermittently. Would not fire the shot! Contacted Canon, they suggested it sounded familiar to them and might be a warranty repair. Ending up being a connecting ribbon cable with a break in it, seemed more likely to fail with larger or longer lens attached that pulled at the body.

All fixed and it was a no charge for me!

1DIII had an err99 recall so no one should pay. From talking to many 1DIII owners I would say about half the time Canon "forgets" about their own recall. BTW, even if you somehow find the serial number range for the recall, the bodies with widespread problems went far outside the listing.

Thank you all. I will contact Canon and go from there. I have tried differnet batteries and memory cards. It does seem to be sometimes around cold days. Now just have to take a day off to drive it out to Irvine, all equipment, so they can do check up on MK2, Mk3, 70-200 and 400 2.8

Do you have LiveView enabled?

One problem I've encountered on a 1D3 is a combination of old battery + LiveView can lead to Err 99 after sitting idle for some time, particularly in cold weather.

LiveView doesn't even have to be engaged, simply having it enabled in the menu is sufficient. Presumably a current draw problem.
