Last week I was sweating in Yucatan. Its unbelievably hot. 30 degrees and sunny.

This weekend I was back in Alberta - unbelievably cold. -30 degrees and blowing wind.

Its hard to find the happy medium.

Here are some animals I found outside near -30. Its hard to believe they can stand in the wind at these temperatures.

Comments and feedback are appreciated. Scott

Thank you for sharing these great shot and braving the cold temperature.

Btw, is it just me or out of the 4 images of the raven, #7 is the sharpest and has the most details. Can't put a finger on what's going on...

Nice images Scott...particularly like that first one...they seem like guardians to the dark woodlands beyond. That last one is a Hooded Redcoated Canonista isn't it, I've heard they shed their coats when they fly south to the Yucatan.

Actually, photography is a happy medium (at least for me). Very nice set Scott. The young elk look super. Your raven images are top notch. I would have loved the opportunity to blow the exposure on those. You brought out the colours nicely and I like the poses too. Well done!!

tntcorp: Glad you like the cold weather animals. The raven was very close, f4, my breath was fogging the equipment, he was moving, the wind was blowing on his feather, very dark and it was quite snowy and I was having a hard time focusing on the raven while lying on the ground in the cold. So I think what you are seeing is very tight depth of field with slightly differing focus point and wind induced motion blur. Next time, I will have to remember to up the f-stop to f8, but I was cold and struggling to frame him with numb fingers. I am glad you enjoyed the shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

ScottHM: Yes the endangered Hooded Redcoated Canonista in winter plumage - good id. Glad you like the images. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

KCollett: Photography is my happy medium too - but obviously grammar is my challenge. Ravens are always so tough even in the low light that existed here. Black on white. Glad you like the poses. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

It's been a tough winter for us Canucks. Our hockey teams took some of the bite out of this winter. Nice shooting in the cold; great lens. And don't be afraid to use the 1.4 TC; both the internal one and an external one also. And hope for spring! Don

IdahoBob: ;Yes he does look happy with that lens. Just shows you weather is all about attitude. Glad you like the images. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

birdied: I can walk back to my warm car any time I like. The animals have only a few trees to hide behind that also hide the wolves and coyotes. As much as I like animals, I am sure glad I am human. Glad you enjoyed my cold animals. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

DonGut: The curling teams took a pretty big bite out of winter too. Spring is coming and soon my bears will be out and hungry near the roads, and the moose will be out with the little ones... Woops, getting ahead of my self, spring is 2 months away. Glad you like the shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Very nice set. The ravens are sharp, detailed, and well-exposed despite the bright, white background. These images show some hardy animals, especially the last one.

Nice set Scott. Black Ravens on white snow must have been a challenge! The animals look like they are handling the cold just fine... well except that last one!

brimull: Well I agree that the first 3 are hardy, but the last … Glad you like the exposure on the ravens. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

harland: The last one is good at handling the winter as long as I turn the seat warmers on. Glad you like the Ravens. It was a great morning, despite the fact that both of our wives thought we were crazy to head out. You should come to Alberta in the winter to see the winter. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Ted ellis: Glad you like the set. I managed to remember not to put my nose on the lcd at minus 30 so the day was great. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Very nice Scott, but you can keep the temps. The elk are well done ,with the little ones too cute. A great job on the Ravens - especially the exposures. I think the snow gave you a little help there. The sheep look good too, although they do look unimpressed with you. ~ Ron

I like those raven closeups in snow. Well done. That happy medium you refer to is usually somewhere between Canada and Mexico. TFS

Sorry all for the late response - I was snowshoing for the weekend without internet.

Lil Judd: Glad you like the pictures. The weather has warmed and hopefully there will be more color on the next ones. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

surfnron: The sheep look (unimpressed) is a look I get a lot, so I am used to it. Glad you like the Ravens and elk. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Herb Houghton: You mean the USA - I often wonder why my grand parents immigrated from the US to Canada in the 1800's. Except I love the winter and am inclined to go north. Glad you like the Ravens. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

That is quite a variation in temperature Scott and kudos to you for getting these fine shots i such conditions.
I like them all but find the Ravens are just wonderful pics with excellent exposures on the blacks and super detail.
