p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Paradise Forks AZ

I put on the wet weather gear and went out to this area for the first time yesterday. We got some rain this weekend and I was hoping to find the washes flowing. There were some low hanging clouds and it was raining pretty steadily (my favorite time to walk around the forest). I finally got to use the rain fly that's built into my photo backpack. C&C always welcome.

I was in luck with some flowing water and shot this waterfall. I think the shot mostly works, but if I was a bit braver, I would have placed the camera a tad closer to the edge to get more of the frozen pool rather than the foreground rocks, opening up the "window".

I think I like how this one turned out as well and it's pixel-sharp at full res. I'm looking forward to printing this.

The first picture is quite special. I really like the B&W treatment on the waterfall and the water pool. The sunlight coming through the trees at the top also gives a nice halo. One minor critique, I think the highlights on the rocks and trees on the left and right sides distract from the subject. Darkening those would create a bit more focus on the water and highlights and create a bit more of a "secret view" feel.

Hey John,

Nice work here. I really like the first one also. The B&W treatment, and the special light you had is really cool. Now, it could be just the result of viewing it on the web, but at first I wondered what all the spots were in the shot, if they were from weeds or what. I finally figured they must be rocks down in the water. Now with a bigger print, perhaps there is no question those are rocks poking out of the water, but you might think about cloning them out to let the pool be smoother water. But those spots or rocks were the first thing that jumped out at me.

#2 is pretty nice too, the light doesn't look quite as dramatic as in #1, but it's still very nice. But I do have one question, whats that line poking up through the water from the bottom of the frame? Again, something that might be best to clone out?

Jim

Another 2 great shots from you. I especially like the composition of #1. I 100% agree with Jim to remove the rocks in the water for this web image. It makes an otherwise perfectly clean shot look dirty at this size.

I think the composition of the first one works great with the foreground rocks cradling the frozen pool. If you had gotten any closer and lost the foreground rocks, I'm not sure it would have been as effective. I also really like your choice of B&W on that one.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I think I will at least darken the moss on the foreground rocks on the B&W shot to keep the focus more central. To answer Jim's questions: the spots are rocks sticking through a big cracked piece of white ice. At full resolution, it's much easier to see that. I think with the right print size, it won't be a distraction so much as it would be a curiosity worth looking closer at. I definitely agree that the crack and the rocks are distracting at the sizes posted here.

Pretty cool! I like the b&w one as well and agree on your choice to darken the moss a little on the left foreground rocks. I used to rock climb out at "The Forks" quite a bit and I'm glad to see you getting some good pics there because it really is a nice place and I think very overlooked photographically speaking. One interesting tidbit... Given the right conditions in early winter that same waterfall completely freezes up which is a really cool sight to see in Arizona.
